• Happy National Pfeffernusse Day! ⚪🇩🇪😋

What's happening in your shop this winter?

Yes, some paint fumes last night, but just in the shop room. They didn't seem to get up here in the house all that much.

Working on another canoe stand, this time out of a Whiskey Barrel. It started out as a major pain in the... scrapping the heavy char on the inside of the stave. I had to make a scrapper from a barrel hoop. I ground one end into a curve to match the inner curve of the barrel leaving a bur on it. After scrapping rub the char down with steel.

Then sanding the backs I had to start all the way down a 40 grit to get all the black and rust stain off, then 60 grit and 80 all on the Radom Orbital Sander, then hand sanding 80 -220.

After that it went together without any problems

I'll work on the second one tomorrow.

For those who haven't seen them before this is what the pair look like finished under a canoe.

Still slowly painting the two 15's in the basement. I went with dark green on both. I had started with light green on the Chum in the background but I changed over to dark for the 3rd and soon to be 4th (and final I hope) coat.
Going to move the canoes to the unheated part of the basement while I glue the gunnels and clean the shop. I might even bring in a non wood canoe for new rails and seats before painting these.
I'm waiting for backordered 4" foam brushes for painting.

Ha to bad, I liked that light green or chestnut grey I think they call it sometime!!

I have a qt and a half left of the Chestnut Grey so I decided to save it for an 18 Chestnut Cruiser I will be starting soon. I moved the two 15"s and brought in this fiberglass Ranger which looks like a Malicite to me. I also built a new set of saw horses and glued up a set of rails, good day.

Last week I took apart my old Coleman cooler, ordered a new set of hinges and drain plug, sanded it down and repainted it. Today the parts came in.
I'm also refinishing the tops of an old pair of Nordic Skis. Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to Pine Tar the bottoms.

I just made this "experimental" coat rack. Epoxied some rocks from Lake Superior to some dowels then epoxied the dowels into this bamboo cutting board shaped like MI's U.P. I didn't even make the cutting board, basically just glued some rocks to it. The experimental part is whether the epoxy will bond well enough to the rocks and the bamboo to be up to the task of holding coats.

That's pretty! Why Michigan UP?
Thank you. I'm from MI and have been going to the UP all my life. I've been wanting to do the rock coat rack thing for some time and just couldn't come up with what to stick them to, then we sort of ended up with the cutting board with otherwise dubious utility and I thought, why not?

You have a weight....Does that mean it released from the hull?

What's the layup schedule? Foam core?

Alan,
Yup, it's off of the Kite, it was stuck pretty good and my post carpal tunnel surgery hands (6 weeks now) were not much use!! But it did pop off, with no damage to shell or plug. Phew!! That crease did not want to release, and I had about 1 1/2 days of cure by the time I pried it off, probably couldn't have waited much longer as the layup stiffened up way faster than I expected.
I'll create a separate build thread once I get a little farther along.
From inside to out, 2 full layers 5.7 twill carbon, then 2 full layers of 6 oz E-glass. Probably will need some selective stiffening along the bottom, for sure where I attach the seat supports. Undecided what the stiffening will be comprised of, but likely not wood strips like Jim does.
I have a video of the release, let's see if it works...

I had a few commission work lately, a walnut coffee table and a bench in the same fashion... The client supplied the wood and metal legs, I supplied my work. The wood was horrible for the purpose, but in the end the client is super happy!! In the pictures bellow, is the table, the bench is quite similar but higher and longer!! I have 2 new commission that I started on the design yesterday, an entrance bench and a small wall mount shelf drawer deal for entrance way!! It should be fun!!

Painted a fiber glass 16' Ranger Canoe hull today, plus trimmed the canvas on the Faber (on the floor) and started on the Chestnut Chum. Yesterday I ripped enough ash rails for 4 canoes. Early this morning I went to my buddy Bob's and sanded/painted the Roberts canoe we are restoring....busy season

Here I am delivering a rebuilt 2004 Harley Soft Tail to Virginia Beach last week.

Now I have room in the boat shop for this. Carbon copy of my Kite, 16.5 lbs so far...

That's a tease ! Patiently awaiting more canoe pics!!! :o

A nice snowy day here so I started work on my 18' Prescott Canoe.

The little I know about the canoe is that it was made by Prescott Boat Company in Brewer, Maine making Boats and Canoes from 1941-52 and I have the #1000 Hull

I took the last pics of the decal on the front deck before sanding it off.

I use a soft wire brush to remove all the loose grim, sanded the thwarts gunnels and decks then vac'd it clean.

Most of the finish is has been removed from the ribs and planks before I was given the canoe.

Nice condition!
I've never paddled a wood canvas canoe.
Some day !

Jim
