I fill the staple holes, after my first rough sand.
Wood glue on my finger, and press it in . Sand.

Trust me, you won't be able to see a staple hole when I'm done but any filling will be inadvertent.

Staple holes need to be filled, as they weep epoxy away from the cloth, leaving little divots,
They a lot more work later.
Just saying.
