No Title

Scott at Swift threw another color at me today..... Ruby red with the scrim layer, makes a nice burgundy.

If I was to get one it would be an all emerald, kev fusion, carbon gunnel kee 15 to replace my Osprey as my big solo. My lovely wife and I would make a nice picture paddling our emerald 14+15. My all emerald kee 14 doesn't show the "beauty" scratches too badly-not at all when it's wet! Bell black gold boats looked real ratty when at all scratched.

How tough are those canoes? Are they class II-III bumpy rivers or more like moving class I deep water type boats? Just wondering?

I am going to try and be careful with the new black gold Northstar, but I did not buy it for bony rivers anyway. This Swift for me is going to be my tripping boat with my junk and the dog. I am just having trouble picking a color...lol I do not want another black carbon canoe, but I do not want something that you can see coming from 50 miles away either.

I asked Scott to take both the ruby/scrim and the sapphire/scrim boats out into natural sunlight and send me some pictures. I want to see what they look like outside in light other than the fluorescent lights of their shop. I am ordering one of those two colors and also putting the yellow/gold weave in the gunnels. Planning on a trip to Swift to pick it up once it is built. It should be ready within 30 days (ish)

Here is the decision made for the new canoe. Looking forward to tripping in it.

1) Shearwater
-Kevlar Fusion with Carbon Kevlar trim (31 lbs.) -Ruby Red with Scrim layer / Champaign (+1.5 lbs.)
-Carbon Tech Package (carbon end caps, carbon carry handles, carbon thwarts, carbon seat on carbon pods)
-Carbon Innegra interior (unknown on weight addition)
-Carbon adjustable foot bar. (+ 1 lb.)
-Carbon detachable portage yoke.

Champaign down low at keel line only.
White stripe and lettering.
Gunnels in black and yellow weave pattern.
seat pods in Carbon black.

Nodrama, congrats on your boat order.

Scott told you that a carbon-Innegra interior would add one pound more than a Kevlar interior?

He told me today that both would be the same weight, which I found a little hard to believe since different fabrics almost always have different weights, but I wasn't about to challenge him. One pound would be a significant difference for my objectives. I'm looking for the absolute lightest weight possible.

Glenn I believe Scott was initially under the impression that the Innegra was just added as an additional layer to the standard Kevlar layers. He spoke with the actual builders of the boats and I guess the layup configuration changes somewhat when the Innegra is added. I am not sure if it is the number of layers, or the thickness of layers. When I discussed the Innegra addition with Charlie W. he advised the Innegra would stiffen the boat and help with interior scuffs etc. Charlie also explained that the ruby cloth would add about two pounds, but that is 2 pounds over a Carbon Fusion build. My target weight was 34-35 pounds which I can accept with a 16'2" solo boat. My Bell Yellowstone in black gold layup weighs this at 14'. I saved some weight by making every single piece of the canoe out of carbon. There will not be any metal or wood components. The first thing I will do when I pick it up is weigh it. I am betting it will be very close to 33.5 to 34 pounds. I am hoping Swift errs on the side of caution and the boat is lighter than predicted. Will let everyone know.

I was told my TeXtreme Carbon fiber Keewaydin 15 Packboat would weigh in at 28lbs with the full CF package. The true weight was 27lbs so they do stay cautious with the weights quoted. Congrats on the new canoe!

Icedragon, you have Kevlar as your interior layer. Did you choose that over the Carbon Innegra tweed, and if so, why?

In the 2017 Swift video on laminates, Bill Swift says all carbon fusion boats -- whether regular carbon, Carbon Innegra tweed, or Carbon Innegra Textreme on the outside -- will have the Carbon Innegra tweed interior.

For carbon fusion I lean toward a Carbon Innegra tweed for the outside, mainly because Textreme costs another $800 US. But I remain confused by seeing carbon exterior canoes with a Kevlar interior, like Icedragon's.

From what Nodrama reports, the Carbon Innegra interior may be better for stiffness and scuffing, but I'm interested in whether there's a weight difference. Plus, I'm not sure I like the look of an all Carbon Innegra tweed canoe:
