More about how Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) has lost its ways and is no longer really a co-op.
MEC governance changes spark dissent among long-time loyalists - The Globe and Mail

Thanks NorseScotsman,

I had some time to kill while waiting today and was this thread came back to mind when I read an article in Canadian Business. It gives yet another comment that the move from what we all liked about MEC was intentional. While I can see a positive that they are becoming event driven - I will be promoting some of my winter activities at the snowfest this year and I think they do have a successful paddlefest in the summer. I don't shop MEC anymore unless it is something I cannot find elsewhere and I need it now. We have a store downtown with 1 parking space and I go somewhere more convenient unless I find myself another reason to bother heading into the center of the city (ie: free tix to a jets game!).

The one thing to note is that the big box stores do more to get people into the outdoors. They help the novices get geared up and then if they survive they will outgrow those stores. I guess they are the day hikers outfitter. Guess that can be a double edge sword - more appreciation of spaces vs uneducated people entering the backcountry and spoiling the easy access sites.

I guess this is just another pile on the mountain post that preaches to the choir.
