I assumed it was aluminum, but couldn't tell for sure. My first trip was also in an aluminum canoe. It was a rented one and we damaged it when we went broadside into a fallen tree and had a hard time retrieving it.
Good idea about bringing someone young and strong along for the heavy work. I was able to train and break-in a few of my nephews to carry the boat by the third day of a trip. Then they got married, had kids and didn't have time for me. I am glad that two of them are still tripping though.
