Spring has sprung...

Spring has sprung, or How I spent a spring break with the grandkids without a canoe....
Mostly walks to the playground, tumbling with the toys, reading Dr Seuss, but some of this too.

Left Thunder Bay at 6:30 last night and for anybody living west of Upsula it is nowhere near spring now. Went from "Hmm, maybe I'll start the garden" to "I think I'll go for a ride on the ski-doo" overnight.
Good grief what cruel joke.

I've seen eagles soaring in sunny skies and elk herds rolling over the foothills, but the changeable weather and the kaleidoscope of clouds it brings has been enjoyable too. Stepped into a small town store out of a downpour to dry off and chat with the owner, stepped outside again 5 minutes later to brilliant blue heavens above and endless horizons beyond the town limits. Gonna try to explore those horizons some more. Don't fence me in.

I spent 17 years in Calgary Brad...I loved going into the surrounding areas and exploring. Some of them are under water now (Oldman river dang) but the forestry trunk road is an awesome drive if you have a vehicle to do it with. Or take 22x south and cut east up onto Skyline Rd. Too many ideas to mention...lol. Maybe it is time for a road trip myself.
Keep the pictures coming.

I love it here, but you probably can't tell that from my posts lol.
We'll rent a vehicle next trip for longer more independent roaming, but till then we'll just keep tethered together. It's all good.
I loved #22 last trip. I need more of it. Haven't made it south of Highwood Pass to your #734 yet; I'll add it to my list. North from that pass (highest road in Canada) up to the TransCanada and Canmore is breathtaking. Sections are still closed for winter and the elk migration. You're right. Too many options to ponder, so I'll keep jotting them down. A little paddling too.
This osprey hung above me today next to Fish Creek, and as I fumbled for my camera it lifted on thermals to a comfortable height away from this tourist shutterbug. A 3 foot wingspan shrunk to a speck in the sky. I clicked and continued, wishing her good fishing.

No Title

So, Mem had 2 days of freezing rain and snow and Christy went canoeing today. Mind you, only the bottom third of Manitoba is thawed and even the local lake 10km away still has sunken ice, but the rivers are open within 3 hours drive of home. She is out on the Maskwa River exploring. Hopefully she remembered her camera after I reminded her last night.

A walk up Heart Creek Canyon near Canmore Alberta.

P4231973.jpg

Starting with warm layers we shed them as we ambled back and forth across split log bridges not yet washed out by springtime floods. There was still lots of snow to play in and no end of smooth pebbles to throw into the icy creek waters. At the top of the canyon there's a waterfall tucked around a rocky chasm corner only accessible by either a scramble up slopes or a shin-deep wade through rushing water, neither of which I felt up to, so it was back to the parking lot for us.

Some of us needed rest stops for weary legs. Me too. And then we were nearly home.
