Source for Jack's Special Plans?

I have them, I'll get copies made and let you know when I'm ready to mail, next week sometime. Sorry to hear he's closed down, I spoke with him on the phone once, nice guy. Here he is in a Jacks Special.

Best wood canvas solo tripper to ever come out of a factory(Chestnut Chum) in my "extremely" bias opinion.

Thanks, Robin. No big hurry because this project won't get started for a while yet. Definitely love the lines of that canoe!

So, the fellow who designed the Jack's Special built by member memaquay is out of business (his website http://www.carryingplacecanoeworks.on.ca/ is still up

Do I sense contemplation of a new canoe build in your future?

I have never paddles a Jack’s Special, but the description, especially the “expert appreciation” and multiple mentions of a “round bottom” give me pause.

Expert and experienced canoeists will appreciate the Jack's Special highly rockered, narrow at the beam, round bottomed hull. This model is a highly responsive solo canoe that can be paddled by 2 persons. Its' wide waterline beam gives it great load capacity for tripping. Maximum tumble-home allows the paddler to "tuck in at the side"and paddle in the 'Omer style' leaned position with ease. The fine entry lines and round bottom make for a very fast canoe. With little effort this model leaves other canoes in its' wake.

I know I favor shallow arch or vee bottoms, but don’t know when a shallow arch starts to become too rounded for my non-expertise. Without a gear load to help sink the hull I have been uncomfortable at rest in most round bottomed canoes, even with a 32” beam

YMMV.

Yup, it's being considered. And I've read the description and recognize it could be an issue. The bigger issue is indecision. I'm also contemplating going larger than my current 16 ft. tripper -- possibly an 18.5 ft. stripper based on an EM White guide model that I already have the plans for. So I will probably be paralyzed for a long while trying to make a decision.

Meanwhile, it looks like I'm heading back to Lobster Lake and the West Branch in September -- hopefully not going for a swim this time. :o

Found a photo of mine, but the build photos died with Photobucket and my backup hard drive died too,

Analysis paralysis. Thank gawd that never effects me in next boat choice ;-)

Seriously re-thinking the fast surf ski idea.

It would be very twitchy as a tandem, indeed, you would need to be an acrobat. However, it's quite solid solo. Mine even righted itself after a tree branch ejected me from the cockpit, so I guess you could say its secondary stability is superb.

It would be my solo boat.

I am going to sound like a turncoat, but I sold my Jack's special, was offered a price I couldn't refuse. I have to admit I prefer my Raven, a John Winter's design, over the Jack for extended tripping. The raven, in cedar strip, is a pretty sweet all-a-rounder.

I have paddled both Mems and Karins and I like them a lot...not tippy feeling at all and they are quite fast...excellent glide.I traded with karin one day and left her waaaaaay behind.
Not a hard boat to build and could be made fairly light with a bit of care. I am thinking of one for myself.

I had copies made this morning while I was in town, send me your address and I'll get them in the mail this week.

If you are blowing through eastern MA on your way North, I have a 1920's vintage EM White Guide (18-1/2 ft) in original condition that you can try out on the local river. It needs new canvas, but I recently paddled it for 20 minutes before taking on too much water.

Fitz, that’s a very enticing offer! I would normally be cutting across western Mass but could make a detour. I’m from eastern Massachusetts originally - grew up in Weston and lived in Sudbury after I finished school. I see you are in Concord. As I firm up my plans, I will reach out. Where do you propose a test paddle?

Depending on when you go through, we could test paddle on the Concord River at the Calf Pasture Landing. It gets busy sometimes on weekends. There are quite a few other landings nearby we could take advantage of. It probably wouldn't take much time to get a test paddle in. I am busy weekdays, but could likely make something work. Just give me a little notice.

I had another 18.5 Guide that I traded for a Chestnut Cruiser. I regretted that trade some, so I have this one in the queue now.

I have used the Guide on tandem trips, heavily loaded and it is a fast tripping canoe (lakes). I bought the first one to pole with, but never got around to trying it with a pole.

Cheers,

Fitz
