Here are some folks doing great work and doing activities they love. As a friend of mine has always said, " the wrong people are doing the cleanup, it should be the criminals that made the mess in the first place." My wife and I come no where near this, but we have averaged a bit more than one pound of trash per mile paddled. That adds up to a lot of lightweight foam and plastic garbage.
This is the first year of weighing our "bootie."
Currently, we are over 500 pounds.

I just got back from 8 days in Algonquin PP. The Jewel of Canada Parks has faded. All the sites I stayed at we're filled with TP around the edges and more trash then I would expect. The trash I cleaned up the TP is still there.

A week ago, I was on Project AWARE. It's a river clean up, sponsored by the Iowa DNR. This was our 15th year. We spend a week, in canoes, cleaning up a section of a different river every year.
Here's a link.http://links.govdelivery.com/track?...aware?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

14 of us, did 12miles of the Cedar, in Minnesota. Our canoes were full after the first 6 miles. We were able to carry out 32 tires, and a plastic barrel, 1/3rd full of Diesel fuel. guessing a ton for trash .
I do this every year, it would be a great thing to start in Minnesota !

Here's what I pulled out of 1 1/2 miles of river, near my backyard, a few years ago.
Time for me to do another clean up !

Holy cow Jim. That is a haul.

I will say straight up that TP is my number one peeve. People crapting all over the place makes me want to firm up the gene pool with some natural selection. That is why there is a group trying to convince the DNR here to put toilets on all the sites in the Whiteshell. This is leave no trace 101 for gods sake.
I long for the days when a plague would wipe these useless b*st*rds from the face of the earth.

No, not in camp....go for a walk or paddle across to the other side. No, downstream from camp please. No, make a hole and bury it. No do NOT burn it in the firepit..some people cook there.

The garbage makes me angry but I can deal with it..its to be expected to some degree. I can pack that out and often do.

Grrrrrr

Every spring at lows lake we clean out the fire pit. Usually choked full of burnt cans and such. (We blame it on the hunters because we all know canoe folk wouldn't do that). As these places become more popular, it's bound to happen though.

Good on you guys for making the effort.

Wonderful job, Jim!
Thank you, thank you.
Let me clarify our situation:
We seldom paddle rivers.
Our day trips are just on area lakes in west central and northern Minnesota.
We have not participated in any designated clean up paddles yet.
Keep up the good work everyone!
Thanks

I have this thing about Bud Lite The number one trash item on the Saco is Bud Lite cans.
And there are no portages!

The number one trash items around here are styrofoam bait containers, plastic shopping bags and beverage containers.
The best "trash" around here are Patagonia and North Face rain jackets. Yes, really!

I saw a nice rain jacket on Head Creek in Algonquin this week just sitting at one of the Portages. I left it for someone else.
