Rethinking Firearms

Doug and I have been taking steps this summer so that I can take some of the work load off his hands, in administrating this site.

The OP stated: "While I don't carry when tripping, the influx of strangers to the backcountry has me reconsidering."

Folks then posted their thoughts on whether to carry firearms while tripping, on what they carry if they do carry, and on the increase in backcountry usage. Some good information was exchanged. Then the topic expanded to bears, dogs, and folks' various past experiences with threats and firearms. The discussion turned to society as a whole and crime trends. The unstated idea is that if society is deteriorating and crime is up generally, then an influx of people to the backcountry might increase a person's motivation to take a firearm along in the backcountry.

Most of this thread relates to tripping, but it is devolving rapidly and has run its course. The risk of causing some ruptures in our relationships outweighs any further utility of keeping this thread open. I had hoped to stay behind the scenes in Doug's absence but I feel compelled to close this thread. I might even delete some posts, if I can figure out how to do it.
