• Happy National Banana Bread Day! 🍌🍞

Mem's making a paddle so do I....

I've used epoxy before on paddles, 2 of them actually and didn't get the penetration I get with the oil and varnish. and on a soft wood paddle every time you bang it and it dent, seems like the epoxy just delam from the wood(small void in-between the epoxy and the wood) I wish I knew how to thin epoxy w/o affecting its strength... Or know of a more penetrating epoxy than west system!

System three clear coat is one of the thinnest out there. I use it on most trim on my canoes too. Haven't had any problems with it. You still need to varnish on top of it for UV protection. It adds years to the life of trim.

Now, just because you don't like the taste of biscuits, I thought i would throw another one into the paddle. It's a new toy, it's fun!

Wow, glueing long grain to end grain... I don't think biscuit can do miracle...

As for system three epoxy, is that what you will put on that paddle? I need to experiment I guess.

Yup, that's the stuff. No good for glueing, but ideal for wetting out fiberglass or using as a sealer. As for biscuit power, well, we'll see if I eat my words, so to speak. It's all experimentation on this one.

Time will tell. But I read about biscuit and dowels "joinery" and the final word on a bunch of testing, was that biscuit and dowels only really help with alignment of the parts when used to joint long grain to long grain, some say that it actually weaken the joint... Anyway, if you use that thing a lot, you'll know quick enough!!

Making some shaving on the girls paddles... Did apply a coat of varnish on the other ones also....

I've never seen a traditional paddle with an asymmetrical grip before, so I think I will make one. Rough cut now, hopefully find time to get on the drum sander later this afternoon.

Hey Canot, if you want me to post back in my own thread let me know, was just thinking we may as well combine them. Got to shape the grip today with the drum sander, turned out very comfortable. For those of us still covered in snow and ice, I thought i would chroma key some summer backgrounds behind the paddle. The asymmetrical grip turned out very good, managed to shape it exactly to fit my hand. Oh yes, honduran mahogany for the grip.

Great looking "stick handling" there you guys!!
Canot, you do beautiful work.
Mem, so do you...is that your hat floating under that cedar sweeper in the background?!

I saw that guy here in Whitehorse... He's quite funny!! Not a fan of that style of music, but he was giving a great show!!

I've got some of Fred's music. He lives just down the road, and the last time I heard he had a music store, selling vintage instruments. http://hobomusicandguitars.com/
But he's into more than just music these days. This art work is called Lost Canoe.

Shame about that hat, it was a keeper.
So are those paddles you guys are making.

Ha ha, yup, I'd say that canoe is fairly well lost, I had a hard time finding it, must be like his hats. After seeing your paddles hanging there, Canot, I decided it was time to get with the game, and I hung some of mine tonight in the back room. Nothing as fancy as yours though, just some screws in logs, I like your idea, I might copy it!
