Knife build / canoetripping.net fund raiser thread.

But I still don’t know how Rippy managed a precise tang-sized slot in the handle.

Again please, do tell.

Where did you get the idea that it was a precise slot. I could stick my leg through that hole. Well not anymore I guess. All joking aside, I used the milling machine to mill a slot to fit the tang. The same machine that I used to mill the finger guard. You can see pics of the milling machine on page 8 post #114. This is why the handle wood is cut into two pieces. The longer piece is slotted from both ends. While it's not exactly sloppy, it's not precise till I force epoxy into any remaining air space. I mentioned this in the glue post. Then it's a very precise fit after the two ton epoxy dries.

Mike the picture doesn't do the grain justice. The knot goes through at a 45* angle and comes out the other side. There are interesting grain lines wrapping around the handle. When finished I will take pics from different sides.

In answer to your question, yes, there is a scientific term. It's called special swirly thingy. Don't stare at it too long or you will be hypnotized.

Good to know. I was thinking a mottle or a somethingsomething burl, but “swirly thingy” is easier to remember.

That handle look like it would fit my mitt quite well!! I wish I could buy more tickets, but with the value of our dollar, I will have to keep it at what ti is... I have all my fingers crossed, and my toes to!!

I'm sure it would, It fits mine quite well. During the sanding process I frequently pause and hold the handle to see where it needs material removed. When it feels good I stop taking material off.

You're a better man than I. Pretty sure I'd need a pattern and line to sand to. Otherwise I'd find myself saying, 'it felt perfect 1/8" ago'.

Nah, not a better man, I just got good training from bearded dwarfs in a hole in the ground.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next set of pictures myself.

MEM,,, interesting.

I got an offer to DJ this Saturday, 400 bucks, not sure if I'm gonna take it, involves travelling all the way up to Nakina, but if I do, I'm gonna sink all that dough into tickets for the Ripster. Let's see, at the current rate of exchange, that should get me around.....2 tickets or sumpin like that. Sheese, may as well just go with my initial investment. MEM is a good idea for the sheath, send the sheath to Mike, the knife to me!

It's looking like the paypal cut off for donations will be next week end, and the USPS cut off any moment now.

Teaser. Finish sanding the Ripster now. The power sanding went across the grain. The scratches show up much more. I use magnification to try to find all the sand scratch and remove it. I start with 220 grit and sand with the grain. After sanding to 600 grit the handle will be power buffed and the Ripster will be done. We will have a drawing, and then I will make the sheath.

What is the bowling ball device? Some shop homage to The Dude?

The bowling ball device is for hand checkering hand made M1911 grips. I screw them down to the aluminum piece and then can work on them from any angle by rotating the bowling ball. My favorite are Black Ebony grips both checkered and smooth.

You had me at M1911.

Someday I’m going to have to cross Iowa on a long road trip. There’s a bunch of craftsmen I’d like to meet in their shops.

You heard the man. I need something to tote my 1911Bolo around with.

If I carried that I wouldn’t need to take the Spam out of the can before slicing.
