Basalt/Innegra, Building Experience?

I'ts been quite some time, since there has been any scuttle on Basalt innegra.

I'm in the process of another stripper build, and entertaining the idea of pulling a composite copy from it.
I have a bunch of Kevlar cloth, and would like some input on the combination.

It's a Bob tailed, Bruce Kunz 38 Spl.
Bob tailing the 38, so I can get by with a few shorter strips.
It won't change the water line, but it could accomodate a rudder.
Have the forms up, working on the strips now.

Bob-tailed... That sounds fun. You mean you'll take the re-curved stern from a Bob Special 15 and blend it in to the rest of the 38 Spl? Are you mostly changing the profile of the stern or will you incorporate some of the cross sections from the Bob Special as well?
Sorry if I'm drifting this thread but I just got so curious. I'm imagining something in profile that could resemble the Swift pack boats, and they look nice. Looks fast in a way.

I don't know much about Innegra but I suspect that it might be difficult to saturate if doing a hand lay up. According to Wiki it is comprised of "highly oriented; 90+% Polypropylene". Epoxy resin certainly does not stick well to polypropylene/polyethylene, nor does Polyester resin. I know that most manufacturers who are using Basalt/Innegra cloth use resin infusion method and that it is mostly done with Vinylester. I don't believe that vinylester sticks well to PP either. So maybe the Basalt is what sticks to the resin and is holding the PP in the laminate matrix in a way? Are you contemplating resin infusion method?

Mine is a straight cut, with the transom, at a forward angle.

I'm curious if the vinyester, would wet out any better than epoxy. I'm guessing the pot life can be adjusted?

Yes the vinylester might behave differently than epoxy or poly. I'm pretty sure epoxy has the highest strength to weight ratio though.

A couple years ago i bought a 16 ft boat from these folks. The layup is 6oz. Glass, Bassalt /Innegra and
carbon / innegra on the football.
This guys strictly a hand lay-up operation and I'm sure “Ben” would be happy to talk to you about this stuff. Mine was not a “one of”, he does them regularly and i’m real certain it’s epoxy he’s using.
