Just got back from an ADK canoe camping trip. AGAIN i found a beautiful campsite with a difficult takeout at the sign. After struggling to unload my gear and storing the boat I set up camp, then walked to the other side of the camp and found an easy takeout.

no need to be embarrassed. Kevin Callan wrote of a portage that was necessary across a log jam. The following year I stopped at it, and wondered why portage.. the log jam was attached to an island and I paddled around it. I sent Kevin an email and I think he was able to correct following editions of the book

So many times I have had to make the choice of easy landing and high breaking surf or more difficult with quiet water exit on the other side.

Water levels matter too.

At low water levels my favorite site at Little Tupper, No. 6, has an easy sand beach around and behind the rocky peninsula at the sign. At higher water that beach is gone and there is no room to store the canoes. That rocky peninsula has ample boat storage, but is unkindly for loading and unloading in wind and wave.

The landings at sites on the Green can be amazingly different depending on high or low water, not just in having enough water to paddle back into the side canyons, but at low water what was a decent landing can now be yards of shoe sucking mud, or an easy step out ledge site can be three awkward feet above the gunwales.

One benefit of family lake trips is that while the first person lands and unloads the other 3 canoes usually noodle around afloat near the site. Half unloaded and hearing a shout of Hey, theres a much better landing over here is not unknown.
