What about a Wenonah Moccasin?

I'm unfamiliar with that model. I looked it up and it seems like an odd boat. It's built specifically for kneeling but has apparently no rocker and is not meant for big water. Sounds similar to the Whisper except for the seating arrangement.

I don't know how cheap you mean by cheap but if it truly is cheap it might be a cheap way to have some fun in a unique canoe.

If it was mine I'd set it up for sitting and use it as a quick day paddler.

I had a 1999 Moccasin in Kevlar Flexcore for a while. Kruger design, but mine was ordered with the Wenonah sliding bucket. It was pretty quick and narrower than most of Wenonah solos. One of the canoes I regret selling, but too heavy for me in that layup with gelcoat. Definitely worth your time.

This is the boat. Definitely going to need work, but maybe not too much. I'm going to see it in person this evening.

Okay, it needs a little work, but for $175? Why are you still here!

He's not available to show it until later today. ;)

It's been a while since I've done a restoration. From where I sit, this one looks like it could be fun. It's not like I need another flat water solo, but who knows? Maybe at least I can save a boat and compare with what I have (Clipper Solitude).

I don't think I've ever done a restoration, nor am I likely to. What I have done plenty of times is put a canoe back in service. Putting them 'back in service' is a lot faster and less money and you get to paddle them sooner. And you also don't care so much when it bounces off a rock.

It seems like a very cool boat, I'd like to try one (Carl's Paddlin has a used one). Some of those edgy, not-for-everyone boats from the past can be the most charming.

Sometimes, I think, the marketing folks can target a specific paddler to excess and thereby alienate others, causing the early demise of a model. I think the Moccasin may have suffered that fate. When one hears “made for kneelers” most think “tippy when seated”, but it was not the case (admittedly mine was a sliding bucket and slightly lower than a hung seat). I had two Scotty mounts on mine and fished a great deal from it. Never felt uneasy in her.

When I say "restoration", that's what I mean. :D

Well it's not as bad as I thought it might be. The skid plates have been shaved down so that they're very thin. Don't know for sure what's under there, but they're very smooth and don't appear to be hiding a lot of damage. At any rate, they don't look like they're going to be coming off, and maybe won't effect it's efficiency much.

The hull is very stiff and has no cracklies when pushed. The tape was over what he said is a crack. I doesn't look like anything that's spreading or spidering, and I actually can't see the crack on the outside. The tape's been on there a long time and left a lot of glue residue when I pulled it. Haven't pulled the inside tape yet, but there isn't much if any movement there. I think it's going to be a straightforward repair.

The seat is baked. The caning will probably fail. It hasn't been padded in years. It's been stored either inside or with the fabric cover - which he included. That cover alone is probably worth at least half what I paid. It's one of those that zips up and completely covers, but actually sized for a roomy tandem.

Probably won't get to it for awhile, since I have a major yard project taking up my time, and I still need to try making that paddle - and well.....it is paddling and camping season after all. :)

I might lay some new tape on it and put it in the water though. :D
