This Is The Bluestone River Too
This Is The Bluestone River Too
Last week I was fooling around on the bank of the Bluestone when I noticed an odd looking stick floating downstream. To my surprise it cut across the current and morphed into a mink that disappeared behind a big mass of boulders on shore. No surprise. They hunt on both land and in the water, moving from one to the other without a pause.
After getting to my own business for a few minutes, I got a glimpse of it among the boulders as it made toward me. I leaned back against a car sized block and waited.
Eventually the animal loped across the gravel beach where I stood and at about 10' became aware of me. It stopped short, looking up with a peculiar squint that seemed almost quizzical. The nose test was inconclusive(breeze in my favor). Then deliberately but without panic, it turned around and quickly retreated by the same route.
In another 10 minutes I saw it at 30 yds, still among the boulders and heading my way again. It did not show itself after that.
Later I began to think about the world of the mink and of the other small things along the river. Their river is a little different than ours. But more eyes see something like the picture below than see it our way.

Annie, those pics could be postcards. That Long Lake shot is awesome.
Acer, your pic and story reminds me why I like wilderness canoeing...I like feeling like I'm a visitor someone else's domain...fish below, small animals around, birds over head.

The placid lower Bluestone River in the evenning, Summers Co., WV
On the way I spotted these two old fireplaces with standing chimneys that formerly were part of a good sized house. From the very early 1800s until the end of WWII the gorge supported a sparse population and a grist mill or two. Before that period it most definitely was on a Shawnee war road that played a significant part in colonial geopolitics.
