The gps forecast was inaccurate to what the weather was going to do. We left camp to check out another lake we haven’t been on before and then the clouds thickened and got darker. Then thunder came, so we pulled onto shore at the first spot that looked safe. Lightning struck on the other side of the lake the second we pulled the canoe out. So we took shelter and waited.

Touring around the lake heading to our final site of the trip. The black flies and mosquitoes were fierce but the people were few. The new big tent arrived two days before the trip 🙏🏻. We only saw a couple other trippers, usually while portaging, on what is deemed the most popular area of Killarney PP. The bad weather worked in our favor and left many sites cancelled. And we had loons get so close we could watch them dart under water beneath us. Truly a remarkable experience. This was our third trip in KPP, and probably not the last.

Erk - Killarney PP is one of my favorite parks. I especially like the trip circumnavigating Prince Phillip Island. The area is very dramatic with the highly glaciated southern shoreline - unlike any other place I have seen on the Great Lakes. However, once a blow from the south comes up you can be storm bound with the open fetch of Georgian Bay/Lake Huron.

Once in a solo boat, a whole new world of freedom and self sufficiency opens up.

What lake is that, Dave? My daughter and family have moved from Tallahassee to Clay County.

It’s Lake Killarney. Sometimes there’s enough water to paddle, sometimes you can mow trails in it clear out to the middle. I hope they enjoy Clay County.

It’s a pretty neat area indeed and also one of my favorites. I was actually looking at circumnavigating PPI on a map after our trip to Killarney. The shoreline looks pretty amazing.

I lived on nearby Lake Tom John in 1988-89, when I was teaching at the FSU College of Law. My daughter now lives on a big lake in Clay County, so maybe she and my granddaughter will use the Nova Craft Bob Special I brought to them two years ago.

Here's a picture of the full rainbow over the lake.

So are there two pots of gold, or you must choose?

Well, we drove in search of the gold at end of the rainbow, but only found the Bantam Pizza restaurant where I spent some. The rainbow was still visible from the porch of the restaurant.
