My Wabnaki

Well I had intended to fiberglass last weekend but ended up sick. I did put a seal coat on. I know some do and some don't but I did. While I was at it I put on a strip of fiberglass on each end. Thread keep coming out so I will have some touch up when it cures. I had a spot here and there where I guess I did a poor job at sanding the glue off and it showed up. Not much but some.

None of the flaws you see will be noticed by others and won't matter when you are out paddling it. Trust me.

Scrape the edges of those glass strips. Far better than sanding.

They will blend in.

If you plan to wait very long, say beyond a day or two ? Wail a week and sand the hull, to get a good Mechanical bond !

Thanks everyone. Jim what tool is best to scrape it with? I had intended to glass it as soon as I could for a chemical bond. Unfortunately I got sick and was down for several days. Now I will be sanding. This weekend temps are low 60s day and 30s at night but next week we are back close to 90.

I use a carbide paint scraper, but any sharp paint scraper will work.
I have even used a pocket knife,
Purdy makes a carbide scraper, for about $15.
Heat is your friend when glassing. I love glassing in the Summer when in the + 80s F.

Never having done this I expected to get like a shell on the canoe after the seal coal. Kind of like shrink wrapping I guess. Instead it just looks like it has been stained. I followed the directions in Gilpatrick's book. I rolled it on and squeegeed off. Is this have it should of turned out or did I squeegee to much off.

It’s hard to answer without pics, but that said the seal coat is intended to soak into the wood so when you are glassing the wood doesn’t rob resin from the glass. Just sand and proceed.

Got the wet out coat on. Waiting for it to not be tacky so I can do the first fill coat. Can it be a little bit sticky.

Finally got to take it the forms and turn her over. Sure did a lot snap/crackle/poping.

The inside of your hull is a LOT cleaner than mine and you stayed on the centerline much better too... Looks great.

Oh Wow! It looks great on the inside. I did the same one, a few years back, and yes it snap crackled and popped a little. I made a temporary make shift center thwart because I got worried about any possible damage that I may cause when scraping and sanding the inside.

Glad to see your back at it. It sucks when life gets in the way of our canoe building habits.
