legal requirements

Waterdog, Yup- 50' of "buoyant heaving line" so basically a standard throwbag, also the bailer must be a minimium of 750ml (just shy of a quart). you can buy a "rescue kit" that contains everything you need for about 15 bucks- the bucket is your bailer and contains a floating rope, whistle, and flashlight. sponges don't count as a bailer.

Stupid law to register canoes. I stopped registering my tripping canoes, that will henceforth not be dipped into Ohio's dirty waters. I've had DNR rangers motor over to me to check my sticker while I'm fishing, while dozens of bass boats motor around. Hand-powered craft don't have the dedicated infrastructure to merit the fees, and cause no harm to the resource. Besides, a survey of American waistline stats would indicate that incentives to physical movement can't be bad public policy.

FYI, Illinois dropped all registration and license fees for a canoe you paddle.
