Knife build / canoetripping.net fund raiser thread.

Still need at least an address for the knife raffle.

As I can't pay pal.

Robin quote,

To help cover the costs of running this website I would like to announce the official start of our current fund raiser. Since this site has no adds, the only way to cover the annual cost of hosting fees and webmaster fees is through money raised from the members/readers. As many of you know, our good friend "Rippy" has stepped up and started a knife build thread where he builds one of his beautiful custom knives, and then allows the website to raffle it off to a donor. It is truly a work of art and something any tripper would be fortunate to add to their outfit. The rules are, $15 donation gets you one chance, each additional $10 gets another chance. You can send a donation via Paypal email address rdlauer_00@yahoo.com, or mail- Robin Lauer PO Box 121 Norfolk, Ct. 06058 Please include both user name and real name if they are different. Also, if you prefer to opt out of the raffle, please let me know. Thank You

Also, my raffle tickets are in, but I'll let you all decide on the semantics. It will be that much sweeter when the knife is mine and you all can pine over your favorite features.

Thanks Muskrat !

I was trying to go Pay Pal, but I Xed out Robin's address !
Your post made it so" I " can win Rippy's knife.
I appreciate it !

Jim

There ! Money, via Pay Pal is on the way !

Thanks Muskrat, Rippy and Robin !

I'm looking forward to supporting this site, beings Memaquay is planning to win ! HA !

In the off chance I win, maybe we can all meet up in Ely, in June and paddle, and I'll even bring the knife ! Sounds like a Hoot !

Jim

I paypal'ed up too, was getting worried that a cheque would take too long what with christmas and international mail and everything. The good thing for the rest of you is the fact that I've never even won a frozen turd in my life, so I'm sure that the Ripster will be hanging off the belt of some other lucky devil! Best of luck gentlemen!

I truly wish you luck !
The way I look at it, we are all winners in this endeavor ! Thanks to Rippy and Robin !!!

Jim

I may have a problem. The paypal thing worked just fine. Fast and easy. I could even choose the currency. Neat!
Anyway, without thinking I tapped the send button before double checking the donor's name. Then I realized the paypal account is in my wife's name. There's my problem. If I'm the lucky winner, won't it be my wife who wins the knife? And will she let me borrow it? I'm gonna have to treat her extra nice till the knife arrives. Or maybe longer. You may have to make another knife Rippy, and start this thing all over again.

She did vote for satin didn't she. Hmmmmm.

Time to post some more pics. In the last set of pics I fit the finger guard and handle pieces to the knife tang. Now it's time to concave grind the bevels on the blade.

First the center lines of the blade have to be layed out so the edge isn't ground off center. I am using the scriber tip on a vernier height gauge to scribe two lines on the edge. You can see the scribe tip to the right side of the blade edge. Brad, I know you're going to ask so the answer is .025" apart.

Here is another picture of the edge after scribing.

Before I can hollow grind the blade I need to grind lead in angles at 45 degrees. This is so I don't shear the abrasive off the sanding belts. Blades are ground with the edge up and the square corner would tear up the abrasive.
I'm at home by my self as the girls are out Christmas shopping so I had to cheat and pull this photo out of another album. It shows how I ground the lead in angles on the edge of the blade with the blade edge up. I will wait to hollow grind till some one is home to take some pictures of the actual contest knife being ground.

Here you can see that I have ground a 45 degree angle on each side of the blade stopping at the edge of the line.

Another view of the same thing.

See you all later with more pics. Dave (Rippy)

Oops I did basically the same thing as Odyssey except I was just reading a post from Memaquay so I accidentally put his name on the entries I put in. Robin can you fix this? Just go through all of the entries that have Memaquay and change them to wysedav. Thanks.

You are good Dave, Thank You

Here are the rest of the pictures from the hollow grinding opp. My Daughter Anna assisted me with these pics so we could have a few "action" shots.

Hollow grinding is done blind with the blade edge up. By blind I mean you are grinding on the back side of the blade that you can't see. You have to rely on your sense of feel to tell if you are on the bevel. Looking at the picture just now and dang, I got more gray hair then I thought.

Close up of grinding. The flash stopped the wheel. I really was grinding.

Nice start but there is more to take off.

You follow the radius right around the point.

Every once and awhile I stop and measure and compare to the drawing.

Having finished the hollow grinding I'm ready to bevel the clip area of the blade.

Just about right. I think I'll quit while I'm ahead.

The blade is rough ground to a 220 grit finish and ready for heat treating.

I have some other projects going and hope to have a few things ready to heat treat at the same time. Probably next weekend. Later Dave

That is hilarious.

That's just too cool. I've heard you say you envy people who can work with wood. I feel the same about metal. Nice work.
