Gunnel notching question

The thing about you Denise is when I owned this site and you joined, I received 2 messages to watch out for you. Seems you have had some issues over at another boat forum. Word travels fast, folks don't forget.

How about scribing your nothes on the stock and using a hand circular saw, fixed to the proper depth, to precisely cut the two outside edges. Then free hand cut all the stock in the middle. That will remove most of the wood for you. Touch up with a hand chisel.

But that maybe too much of the "by hand" look for you

Thanks, I think Cruiser has the right idea, see below.

Robin, you can setup a jig for the radial arm and just use your regular saw blade to cut the notches. Just think of your regular blade as a narrow dado, just do a cut, move it, do a cut move it ... it is a bit of work, but you won't have to spend the cash.

It's a bit more back and forth, but it will do the job.

Brian

I will set up the Cross cut saw outside on my flat driveway, using a heavy pine coffee table we don't use anymore, and use my picnic table benches to support the 18' stock, moving the benches when needed. I'll use your idea above to use the single blade as a dado.

I'm going to use a rat tail file on the corners like Iskweo suggested, maybe leave a little wood in the corners and file it round. I'll run a test on some scrap and see what develops.

It might take a while but I have lots of free time.

Thanks for the help.

Yep ! spend a lot of time with a dull rat tail file ! Need to break down and get a new one !

I go to estate auctions here locally ! Wood working tools go unbelievably cheap !

I deleted my post, and I put the troll on ignore.

Definition: An "Internet*troll" or "Forum Troll" is a person who posts messages to bait people to answer.*Trolls*often delight in sowing discord on the forums. A*troll*is someone who inspires flaming rhetoric, someone who is purposely provoking and pulling people into flaming discussion.

I realize I'll probably be called a troll for posting this but I'm beyond caring.

Seems to me that you read into people's comments a little too much.

As I have said before... there is absolutely NO ONE here that bears ANYONE any ill will. I dont feel bad anymore

Robin, I also patiently await the progress photos!

I have used a circular saw in the past to painstakingly carve out dado slots, as well as my el cheapo table saw, takes a while but the job gets done!

I guess I missed this over the last few days as I've been working on my own projects and have been swamped with a lot of home/work projects, summer is just too goddam short!. The one thing about this site is the amount of civility that we hold for each other, our ways of doing things, taking into consideration how we are doing it and sharing new ways of doing things or choosing not to do things. Robin set a standard that I have tried to keep without "speaking" to posters and I DO NOT want this site to go down certain other sites paths. Since you all pay to keep this board alive, I only run it, I depend on all of you to be civil to each other. Yeah, I don't always like what I see posted here but I also tend to sit back, monitor and let things run their course unless it starts to get too ugly. There is no need for snarky comments/putting each other down...you all get the idea. If you don't like the way someone is doing something is no reason to voice a harsh opinion. We all have something to share here, we all have many skills at different levels and different approaches, heck, I make crap up all the time to make repair get done and I know a few have called them good ideas and as well I have benefited from the amount of knowledge that has been shared here.

I apologize for highjacking this thread but wanted to get my .02 in.

Just kidd'n, lol.

not to hijack either, But Dougd, what you did isn't hijacking, it's moderating! With the dozens of personalities, and hundreds of different ways of doing things there's bound to be friction now and again, you're like the kind uncle that allows a little freedom and horseplay, but when things get too rough, you stand up and bellow "enough"!
We've all had uncles like that, and we all remember them fondly ;)
