Yesterday was sunny and cool so I thought what better than to grab a boat and go paddling. It was a last minute affair and after putting racks on the Highlander and grabbing my stripper it was 2.30 before I was motoring. Roughly an hour later I was on the water.
I went to a cool little river that we drive past everytime we head out but have never been on, until now. Devil's Creek, off Hwy 59. I went from the railroad trestle out towards the lake. Mostly farm country with a few houses but that thins out the closer to Lake Winnipeg you get. Lots of pasture with nice open oak forest along the banks. It could make for a nice overnighter at some point. The river is actually quite wide and turns into what they call Devil's Lake as you go further up. If you go the other way it narrows down more. I will save that for another day.
As it was, I did about three hours of paddling. No issues to speak of so that looks good. A little stiff today. I guess that is a reminder to me to pick up the pace with my exercise.
I have not gotten a fishing licence this year yet so I had to forego that, but I had some fish taking bugs off the water and there were eagles and herons fishing so I can only assume it will produce.
My Cottage Cruiser is a nice boat but a little beamy for a solo and really catches the wind since I didn't think to ballast the bow down. I really do need to put more effort into getting out for day paddles and overnighters on these little rivers.
