Trust me Dave04 - we have many bears in Vermont/New Hampshire. You don't see them much when you are out and about. But we see them in our yards quite a bit. They love black oil sunflower seed. Here is a shot of a cute little guy in my back yard awhile ago.

I had an outdoor career, and have spent a life time trying to avoid bears. I camp away from my food, make lots of noise, and usually bring dogs along. Despite all the effort, the number of encounters is approximately 100. Most of them were black, some had humps, but none were white. They were at all kinds of distances including 30 yards, eight feet, and 18 inches.
