Canoe Art: Paintings, Sketches, Sculpture, Architecture

As the youngest member of our 7 person family, I had to sleep in the attic of our old farmhouse, a 1736 stone farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania. In addition to my bed, the attic was a repository for all the little-used or discarded stuff in the family. Among those ephemera were stacks of LL Bean catalogs going waaayyy back in time because my Dad was an avid camper and fisherman. I spent lots of time poring over those catalogs wishing for Bean boots, wool shirts & pants, camping gear etc. The covers, which were all art rather than photos at that time, provided me with fodder for lots of mental adventures. This cover would have been typical of the subject matter- and frankly, still appeals to me!

Faces on the Yukon.... Something many paddlers experience and hallucinate during 24+ hours of continuous Yuikon River race paddling, defects in basalt rock walls develop human cartoonish faces in your mind. They all watch you. Painting by Nathalie Parenteau

John Pike, "Lake Lure". A friend inherited it and was going to toss it. I sure couldn't let her do that even though I don't have room to hang it, so now it sits leaning against the wall in a closet with all the other extra art in the house.

its surprising what some will throw away. I've gotten two nice outdoor hunting paintings from the roadside. I suspect maybe wives or girlfriends tire of something they may not connect to. It is a shame to not have the painting on display.

First one is a Bernie Fuchs print (348/360). The second is a watercolor by an artist friend of my wife and me on an evening paddle on the Colorado below Moab, UT. She took photos from another canoe and turned one into a painting, which now hangs in our entry. The sculptures are gifts from my wife, who prefers shopping for canoe art to paddling canoes.
