• Happy National Eggnog Day! 🎄🥛😵

Ben's Arkansas Traveler, Iowa Style

The only problem I've ever had with the dress lining is if the cut edge is wet out. Then one or two of the long strands will not pull off when peeling. Just make sure to have a dry inch or so at the edges.

I just made it back from the shop. And the test piece is wetted out. Anxious to pull the Peel Ply tomorrow. There is a wrinkle, from where it was rolled on the bolt. I should have BORROWED my Wife's iron !
The difference I noticed between the treated Peel Ply, and the Walmart Special, was the Treated did not seem to pull as much excess resin from the hull, as the Walmart stuff. I'm guessing the treated may also leave a smoother finish.

I will continue testing again.

One fill coat on the Traveler, one more, and we will call it good.

Making head way on the Traveler !
Ben finally had enough time to install the decks and gunnels.
I sure like it when two people can install gunnels, it just comes out better !

Here's the latest pics.

Still debating the seat.

Thanks Latremorej !

With Nokomis done, We are back at Ben's Iowa Traveler.

We are making a pivoting backrest. This was our first attempt at steam bending. It was a breeze, bending the 1/4" Walnut.
Plan now is to mount the brace in Walnut blocks, attached to the inwhales.
We are relying on friction to hold the rest in place.
Any better ideas ?

Anyway here are some pics.

Friction should be just fine. Will there be any other regular thwarts in the boat to hold the gunnels together? If not or you are concerned a disc of aluminum or stainless steel fender washer screwed to the end after the mounting block is slipped on, then mount to the gunnel. The screw will hold better if it is screwed through a hardwood cross dowel instead of just the end grain.

Yes, there will be a forward thwart.

So I'm not to worried about the hull spreading right now, if it does, We'll add another thwart.

The plan is to split the mounting blocks, and if friction doesn't do the trick, then adding a thumb screw might be in order.
Or ???
Thanks !

Jim

The Traveler is finished.
Hope to get more pics up tomorrow, when I get it outside. Watco is still tacky.
Here's the back rest installed.

Friction should be plenty adequate, to hold it in place.
Thanks all and for the help ! And Boatman 53 for guidance.

Ben is pretty pumped, and wants to take it home to show, but not until I paddle it !

Jim

That looks fantastic, Jim. Can't wait to hear how it handles on the water.

OK ! This am, we pulled Ben's traveler out into the fresh air.

He's gotta be happy. Looks great!
I see it seems to handle pretty good in the fresh air, time to get it into a medium with a higher density! ;)

I can't hardly wait to put it some denser medium !

WOW is all I can say !
I took Ben's Traveler, down my usual local trip, the West Branch Des Moines, it flows by my shop.

Soo stable, and dry. I have a narrow schute created by a rock dam, in town. Just one little drop, and I expected to get at least a little water, over the bow. But no, dry as could be.
It tracks great. I was able to float 3/4 of a mile, without a single corrective stroke. The backrest was soo comfortable !

I usually hesitate taking camera gear with me, but the Traveler was so comfortable, the fear is gone !

Sitting on a cushion, on the bottom, allowed me to snake tight along the shore, under the tree canopy.

I'm going to build another, for ME this time.

My Super Wife took several pics of me at the take out.

I'm going to have a hard time letting this one go ! At least my Grand Daughter will have a great canoe to start paddling with !

Fantastic Jim that really looks good on you.
Jim

Thanks !
If I could pare my gear down to 20 - 30# for a week in the BWCA, I'd be paddling it !

After my CF Nokomis, another one of these is in order !

Jim

This canoe has been on display, another way of saying Free Storage, at the Nokomis Wood workers Shop, for the last year !

It will soon be on permanent display at my Oldest Son's and family home !

They have finished the home of their Dreams, and it will be resting on two Cedar beams that span their great room.

I hope to have pics of it soon !

Here is a pic from the Nokomis Wood Workers Shop, A member only Non profit wood workers club !
