After studying Cruisers great Paddle making thread.

I remembered the Dewalt Variable speed Disc sander, that my son bought me. He used one, building his log sided home.

This sander, equipped with a 40grit disc, can hog off wood like no other !

He was so impressed with it, he bought me one ! That means he was really impressed !

It's too aggressive to use on a hull, but slowing it down, gives you great control. A paddle making tool.

Maybe if Santa left you with cash, or a gift card for Christmas ? You might be interested in one ?

They are around $80.

This is a good tip. It really works!
I whipped out a great looking contoured carry yoke in about 10 minutes with a cheap angle grinder set up with a sanding disk of 60 grit. Once roughed out, just had to smooth it with a random orbit sander, then a few coats of varnish. It looked as good as one of those $150 mail order ones, if I say so myself.

Me too, I'm the master of angle grinder flapper wheel wood butchery. Just gotta do it outside, with a mask on, and maybe a hazmat suit. Used one to take old paint off my entire log house, stripped the logs bare. Of course with all the old lead based paint I inhaled, I can't remember my first born's name, or even where my pecker is at 2 in the morning. But it sure worked good!

lol. I'm reminded of the old public service announcements that used to run in the U.S. at 10 PM: "It's 10 PM: Do you know where your children are?"

Hey Mem !
Take note of the Dust port ! Easy to hook up to a shop vac.
A Mind is a Terrible thing to Waste ! :D :( ;)

What ?

Good call Jim, although the lead paint particles must have affected my vision as well, cause try as I might, I can't seem to find the dust port on my grinder, lol.

Angle grinders are much harder to control than a disc sander. They can easily remove too much material. I like hand tools and then a little disc sanding at the end.
I like strong paddles made with mahogany, ash and walnut. They stand up to rocky rivers.

ppine, I actually find the grinder easier for hogging out wood because you can use 2 hands on it, not to mention that I don't like spending hours and a dozen disks just to rough out a paddle, If you want real speed and control, put a chainsaw disk on it, that's what the logcarvers use.

How does a disk sander differ from an RO sander--they both seem to use 5" hook&loop sanding disks?

I've used a grinder with flap disk, on metal. Is the same flap disk used on wood? It must make a heck of a dust storm. Perhaps a tool for outdoor use.
