An excellent line I have found is spyderwire. It has a dyneema core with a polyester sheath. Designed for sailing rigging, so knots work great in many weather conditions. 1.8mm. 100ft spool is about $20 at westmarine.
I have a friend who uses a 100 degree rule. As long as the sum of the water temp and air temp exceeds 100, he is good to go.
