I spent three nights at Waldo Lake with my Son and Grandson. The original plan was for a longer trip with paddle in dispersed camping, but we settled for a campsite in the Shadow Bay Campground on the southeast side of the lake.
The area is notorious for mosquitoes in early to midsummer. We were there during peak season. I guess my mosquito tolerance is fairly high. There was a lot, but it was tolerable.
The weather was great; sunny and mid 80s during the day and cool at night. The elevation is about 5400 ft.
We had forest fire smoke that came and went. There were fires burning both north and south of the lake.
The fires of 2022 did a lot of damage. The campgrounds on the north end of the lake are still gated. My 10 year old Grandson son asked "Is that a desert over there" referring to the far north end. The fire of 2022 re-burt a burn scare from 1996.
The lake is one of the cleanest and clearest lakes anywhere. You can see 100 feet on a calm day. The deeper water has an indigo/blue color. Some of the shallow bays have a turquoise color that looks almost tropical. It is a unique and beautiful lake.
My 18 year old son paddled the Wenonah WWC-1. He really enjoyed it. He used a double blade for the first time. He would fall back and fish/ take pictures and then easily catch back up as my Grandson and I tractored along in the old Tripper.
