I sprayed the corner braces with rubber, then covered with a sheet of rubber using rubber cement. Going to pick up some cap nuts. Still nervous with these Gunwales. Any recommendations welcome.

Old fire hose, canvas and rubber.
I figure by the time you fart around, make adjustments and gather material you could just spend the money on some load stops. I bought a 2 pair pack of yakima round bar load stops from ebay for $42 shipped to my door. I don't have a nice boat yet so don't care much about the gunnels.
I probably wouldn’t select these gunnels for a new canoe. I’ve got a fraction of the cost of the only mfr’d stops that fit this rail. Retired people get cost conscious.
What did you pay for the canoe? $42 bucks is cheap
I have never paid more than $500 for a canoe. At one time I had 9 canoes and I think I sold half of them to Alan G when my family did not have the passion for canoes like I do. The boats are not cream puffs but still in fine usable shape and some needed a new seat or skid plates or found a soft spot in the shell.
Right now I am looking for my forever light weight boat that I can trip in and that looks like it will cost $4-6k plus gear. That will be in the top 10 of the most expensive purchases I have ever made. Because of that I am driving around the country testing boats. Too bad Clipper canoe doesn't have a rep in the midwest or east coast. I am a complete tripping rookie.
I have about $410 in a new yakima round bar setup for my prius. All pieces are new but the 3/4 bar is from menards. $579 online for same setup. Very cost conscious with 4 kids (2 in college and 2 college graduates), and a wife who stayed home raising our kids but now won't go back to work.
Sorry for the ramble....ATM was out of service this morning, rained too much over the last few days and have water in the basement. not ready for my trip to the Buffalo next week looks like rain, grass needs mowed but haven't got mower running, etc
I can't tell the spacing of the u-bolt from your photo, but I'd consider drilling a couple of holes through a hockey puck to take the place of the steel plate.
I hate the sport of hockey, but I love hockey pucks for many projects that need a strong piece of rubber for a cushion or a vibration damper.
That’s a great idea! I’m actually going to try that. I have plenty of corner braces, was looking for a non-metallic face for the stop. I can grind a flat side to go against the bar. Now, where do hockey pucks come from?

Unfortunately Yakima continues to make simple things more complicated. And expensive.
