There is truly something wrong with me. With 7 hulls already I'm slotted to pick up a Mad River Eclipse in two weekends. Had one and sold it and have secretly cried about that for a while now. Saw this for short change and just had to have it. Best part is I don't have to do a thing to it! Hell, I have plenty to do on the other 7. Think it's the demise of RX and I just like the older MR's that makes me keep picking these up when I find them. Now I just have to figure out where in the hell I'm going to store it!

I think we have the same affliction, last weekend I drove north into a steady snow to buy a Old Town Camper for what reason I still don't know. Nice old canoe but I don't really need another RX canoe (#3) when my true love lies with the wood canvas, These canoes make me crazy

Always looking and saving for one myself. Hard to pass on some. So hard. So very hard. Looking for pocket cruiser tandems and high end solo right now. There is always one every month or so that makes me want to of give it a loving home. Plenty of watco, 303, and inside storage. So many canoes so little space. Have to wait on the right addition to the fleet.

Until I got on my boat building kick last year I'd cruise Craigslist and classifieds forums for used canoes constantly trying to find a good deal on just the right boat. And justifying something as "just the right boat" has never been a problem for me. Fall was the best since there weren't many other people looking to buy and sellers didn't want to store it for the winter.

While I still enjoy looking to see what's out there it's strange to not have that desire to buy right now. But in a couple weeks Midwest Mountaineering is having their spring expo, which includes a big canoe/kayak auction. Very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon just watching them sell. And even though I don't really want to buy anything, and need to buy something even less, I can't help but wonder I might find one or two beat up and forgotten hulls for cheap that could use a little TLC.

I was up to 16 boats at one time but by last spring was down to about 1/2 dozen. Then I picked up a couple on the cheap and started building. Here we go again!

Hoping you enjoy your new ride and congrats on buying something you can drive off the lot.

I am trying to get by with only three.
For all of you canoe mad people out there. It could be worse, much worse. My Dad once collected cars, fancy expensive cars. At one time he had 28 of them and paid rent on a warehouse. They all needed maintenance and improvements. He made money on nearly all of the them. But his marriage got much better when he got serious about collecting guns instead.

Canoes take up a certain amount of room, and need proper storage. But they age pretty well if kept out of the elements. Just be glad that you have passion for a sport and its equipment. I feel sorry for people with no passions.

I am getting older now, and will part with some equipment in the future. But I just found out my brother's 18 foot tipi is for sale........

The joke in my household is my children's and grandchildren's inheritance is in boats. Even with cutting down I just picked up one last spring and am hoping to pick up a used canoe from a member of this forum in the near future. I guess it really is an addiction: "Hi...my name is Snapper and I'm addicted to canoes."
Is there a 12 step support group out there for folks like us?

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

That's assuming one would like to escape the addiction! How about - Hi, my name is Greg and I'm addicted to canoes, paddle me if you wish otherwise just deal with it.

dougd, I assume you know that the Eclipse isn't full-thickness Royalex. And that it oil-cans when in the water. And it weighs 62 lbs with wood trim. And it makes a nice tripping boat for water up to mild Class II. And it handles tight, twisty streams with ease.

My ex and I once had 11 boats (including an Eclipse). Since moving, I've done my best to resist the canoe acquisition addiction, since I have room for only six boats in the garage. But this weekend I'm looking at (i.e., test paddling) a cedar-strip Galt Dandy. If I like it, it will replace my BlackGold Wildfire. But if I can't bring myself to part with the WF, the Yellowstone Solo will have to live outside.

I really should know better.

With the apparent demise of Royalex, and any replacement materials an unknown, a bargain priced RX or RL canoe becomes more and more appealing.

I have had a couple of RL (R-lite, R-84, etc) canoes and some, especially the tandems, did oilcan. Especially when paddled empty.

I’m not planning on parting with any of our RX canoes anytime soon, although some are getting harder to carry the older I get. Still, we have a couple of RX canoes that I like enough to consider buying a back up if I saw one underpriced.

The Eclipse was the rubber Malecite (more or less). I don’t think it ever found much of a market, but it is still a nice all-around design.

Philtrum, The Eclipse I had didn't seem to oil can and I used it a far amount before letting it go. I like the hull well enough to buy it and at the price they are asking I almost feel criminal buying it! But, I swear this is my last purchase, I swear!!! Gonna give up CL and wear blinders and take up knitting...I swear!!!!

I haven't bought a new canoe in two years! My friends are astounded. I did buy a new tractor though.

Dougd, I hate to see a fellow paddler suffer. Tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna let you store a couple of your boats here at my place. I'll look after them, and when they're dusty I'll take 'em out tripping for a rinsing off. You'll have more room for your new-old MR RX, and you'll always know the rest of your hulls are safe and sound. While you're at it, may as well throw in a few nice paddles. I'll keep those rinsed off too.
