Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

Honestly, other than the relentless wind, I'm very happy that we've returned to an old time winter. I love being able to xc ski or snowshoe out my back door. The last few winters all we've been able to do is go for walks in spring-like conditions. I like snow a whole lot better.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

Agree wholeheartedly with this.

We live with (and love) lake effect here in Cleveland. It is increasingly rare.

Earlier this winter, we awoke to a couple inches where we live on the first ridge due south of Lake Erie. 20 minutes northeast of us, there was 4’ on the ground. Just depends which direction the wind is blowing. We chased the snow there to ski for a few days.

When we first moved to SW MI I remember hearing a weather forecast calling for between 2 and 20 inches of snow and thinking that's a pretty wide range. Turns out we got less than 2 but 15 miles away they got more than 20.

It's all good fun but I do prefer when a storm misses us occasionally

The high was only 34 yesterday but there was zero wind so it was comfortable enough to paddle without gloves or hat. I kept looking at the outside temp expecting it to be 45 or 50. Lots of "borderline" days in January so far and I'm thankful to sneak in a few paddles with Mother Nature's permission.

I must be getting old. We have a long tradition of setting up wall tents with a stove in winter and having parties. A large tipi is even better with a fire. We are having a mild winter, but have not had one in awhile.

Anchorage doesn’t get the extreme cold like they do in the interior of the state, it we get our share of wind and snow. Here are some pics of what I had to deal with over the years.

First, here is my quiver of shovels that I used. Each one had a different purpose.

These two were from mid November 2023. The car was my tenants. He got stuck on the first day of the storm and abandoned it there and left the state.

There are my boats.

Here are two examples of the wind. That board was part of neighbors fence that blew apart. The boat is an OT Tripper that was behind the house. I once lost a different tripper that blew away, not finding it until the end of March.

These two were from a particularly snowy year. This was February 4th, we still had two more months of snow.

I now pay to have the snow removed since I’m out of town too much to keep up with it.

And I was feeling a little sorry for myself that at age 77 I still have to spend my winters in southern Wisconsin dealing with 4” snowfalls while friends and family members snowbird the winter in the south.

I love the snow and for most of those winters I had plenty of time to shovel, since I worked seasonally in the summer. Some years I shoveled almost every day. Between storms I would widen the driveway so there was room to push new snow to the side allowing me to get it cleared quickly. Then I would go back at my "leisure" and throw that new snow over the top. I enjoyed it, there was a certain Zen to it. Type B fun, if nothing else.

Is Spartanburg we got the season's first dusting of snow for a couple of hours, followed by several hours of sleet and then freezing rain. It was mostly an ice event and deemed a good day to stay by the woodstove in case of ice or limbs taking out the power lines.
We are looking forward to a good snow, it has been a couple of years since we have had one.

A lot of the snow we get in the Poconos is lake effect. We need bigger storms from other sources to form a base, but the lake effect is pretty regular and freshens things up for better skiing. Unfortunately the base doesn't last long because of big temperature swings and lots of rain.

In this photo my wife and I were making a toast to lake effect snow.IMG_2364.jpeg

Mason,
Anybody that uses the word skookum is welcome at my camp fire anytime.
Used to be commonly used in Washington State for 150 years.
I lived in western Washington several times over the last 45 years, and my daughter is there now (dammit).

There used to be a knife called the Skookum Bushtool that was all the rage because of a guy named Mors Kochanski. I owned one for a while and sold it, as one does. I'd like to find another one somewhere.

We're (the communal tribe in central vermont) enjoying clear 20d days, and sauna-ing with dips in the spring-fed pond to cool off. Every time I come up here I wonder why I don't live here; every time I go back to Virginia I remember.

We don't get much snow in this part of TN, so if we do enjoy taking walks in it.IMG_20250111_114139393.jpgThis 4" snow fall shut the schools and some businesses down. The store shelves were ravaged the day before. I won't get a boat on the water till it gets above 45 degrees out. Instead I stay busy working on canoe or camping gear projects. Working on a new seat for my 13' Mohawk.IMG_20250106_140627923_HDR.jpg
I don't know if it'll work? Just a thought.
See you in the spring.
