Sometimes I might be…well I don’t know, a little too dismissive of new ideas? I really wasn’t that receptive to that “portage pal” tool and after some deep self analysis I have turned over a new leaf.
While I’m still not going to buy the above mentioned gizmo, I have now come to my senses and will be seriously considering adding this to my kit. I might buy 3, one for Memaquay, one for Gamma and one for me. If we all met on some nw Ontario campsite, imagine the clicks my YouTube channel would receive as the three of us sat around a campfire talking tari@#s wearing our new bug defense systems.

Back in my tree planting days we did kind of the same thing except with a cattail head or some other weed by taping it to the hard hat. Worked well for the deer flys and horse flies not so much for the skeeters and black flies.

Did it actually keep them away or did they just attack it instead of you?

Every once in a while a swarm of dragonflies will descend and magically all of the black flies disappear from the area. Later in the season, the same with deer flies. I've had several of them land on my shirt as I welcome their presence. There is almost no greater joy than to experience seeing a dragonfly physically tear apart and consume a captured deer fly.

The dragonfly on my map appears to be seeking grid north, no nasty species of other flies are anywhere nearby.

Hard to say, I’d imagine they were still there, they just didn’t bounce your face as much. Maybe they looked like a big set of ears, which is their favourite part of a moose.
Always wanted a dragon fly tattoo on my shoulder as a deterrent for when I’m tarps off.
Coolest insect ever besides the honey bee.

I saw a video with Kevan Callan the Happy Camper that used one. I guess they must work😀. It would be interesting to see, I think a field test and report is in order.
