I knew someone , that years ago, had a 24" canoe he used with his family and it broke down into 3 sections. Could this be a similar canoe?

No they cut it, but a wood canvas canoe can be put back together with new planking, even when cut in half like that, because the planking, ribs, & rails are the structure, ( why keel-less canoes survive river use).
