The start of a paddle

I'll keep that in mind, mine was way below room temp. I did another one today that was yellow cedar and it didn't seem to soak up much oil. I sanded it with 320 before oiling, what do you recommend? I had varnished that paddle years ago and it never looked as good as it does now.

I would think that the fact that it was varnish before prevented the oil penetration!
 
Even if I sanded it all off? The YC seemed to be very tight grained.

I still think that some of the varnish penetrated into the wood on the original application and that might slow the penetration of the oil! The wood should be warmish and oil warmed up to help with absorption into the wood!

Try it and see if it make any difference!
 
So an other paddle getting close to be delivered.... This one is going to a husband to be as a wedding gift from his wife(my client).... Sitka spruce, white ash!! I quite like that one!! Light but stiff, and with he ash blade trim and ash wear strip north and south on the shaft should make for a pretty hard waring combo!!
