Stain or ? Over Spar Urethane?

I just remembered, I put system three epoxy on top of the stain, then marine varish on top of the epoxy, and everything worked fine.

Thanx scoutgriz for the lesson. I am going to print your explanation and post it on my shop wall as 3 years from now I may have yet another boat and need to revisit this all again having forgot.

If today's concrete repair project goes as planned, tomorrow I will get to this.

In tying together concrete & canoes a long-dormant (most likely damaged) neuron just fired recalling a concrete canoe that was built by someone in the industrial tech department back in college. I think I have a photo somewhere. I bet he didn't stress about wood finish. Hmmmmm...

Ugggggh. May not get to the finishing today as ran into this snag. I do remember adjusting for this with my 1st set of replacement seats a few years back. I hope the hanger bolts have enough play to be able to drill through the center of the seat "arm". If I learn anything of relevance I may post something later in the Boat Refurb section. I guess this speaks to a hand-built canoe however.:)

They are in & not refinished. Did add some Teak Oil to end grain where they were cut to fit. Looks goofy in my opinion but the finishing will come later as we committed ourselves to a small trip beginning Thurs so packing & planning already. Blech...I do want to match finishes a bit more.

When it comes to finish compatibility/functionality, for my purpose I believe I can boil it down to the following...A urethane coating (be it oil or water based) is like a hard plastic-like shell; best/good for wood that does not flex like these seat frames. Obviously oils & stains penetrate the wood & easier to top coat and re-coat. Good for wood that flexes. I now know a Spar is a boat mast of sorts so I would imagine a spar urethane or spar varnish flexes a bit?? Still trying to figure out if Minwax Gel stain is water based or not. Have a jar in my hands and it speaks nowhere to this on the front of the can. Will need to taste it.

This weekend I hope to tackle this by some path TBD. Possibly using a bit of Liquid Sandpaper to break down the urethane a bit.
Does the Minwax say, water cleanup? If it does, it is water based. If it says cleanup with mineral spirits, then it is oil based
