I rediscovered backpacking before I rediscovered canoeing, both from my youth in Boy Scouts (and some overlap with family, as my uncle was my Scoutmaster).
Because of that, I only carried a lot of stuff when I took my daughter or wife along... the rest of the time, still, I consider it backpacking with a canoe... my last trip to the St Regis Canoe Wilderness, I was at about 60 lbs total, including clothing (6 lbs), gear (16 lbs including saw/hatchet), food (10 lbs), canoe/paddle/pfd (25 lbs), and fishing gear (3 lbs). That's not too bad at 58 yrs old... My first St Regis Trip I was 47, and it was much the same, just a heavier canoe (about 28lbs, vs 22 now.)
When I take a guest, they've got to be comfortable... that means cooking, tents, tarps, wannagan, chairs, clothing, etc.
