Osprey Build

Awesome! I think I recall you saying that you like two piece stems. (inner and outer) It will be interesting to see that method as you do it. I see you are doing both sides at the same time so far. I guess maybe I should shut up sit back and watch. I wouldn't need to ask half the questions I do if I'd be patient.

memequay,

I see 9 strips on each side, I think. How many strips will it take total, even counting the shortest strips near the keel line? I would ask about the stems but your facebook step by step answered those questions completely.
And this Osprey is essentially the Kite that I'm building, except for the crease, right? And I was shocked to see that you could build in your basement!! I did a build last year (and the year before, it was a slow build) with my nephew. We started in my basement, but moved out to the boat shop when it came time to sand. But somehow, you sanded both the outside and inside of the hull in the basement. How the heck did you do that without making a huge mess?

I hook a vacuum up to my sander, it works very well, hardly any dust at all. I built four canoes in that basement. Don't live there anymore though. I've never counted strips, because I usually have such a mess of them in different lengths and stuff, but I think the kit they sell at Noah's Marine comes with 60 full size strips. These ones are not very wide compared to what I normally build with, but some of those tight turns needed the thinner strips. The dark cedar doesn't show up well in those pics, but once it is sanded, with the glass on, it will look very nice. Up until I got that board, I was still going to paint it, but one board changed my mind.

Hey Mem, I don't know what time it is in Canada, but here in Iowa it's time for an update. I've chewed my fingernails down to the first knuckle. Whats happening up there in the north land? Rippy, or whats left of him

PS I know you've been busy but spring is on it's way. Set the dang beer can down and work with two hands for a while. Mean while I'll go drink another gallon of coffee and see if that helps my composure. Rippy, jumping up and down

Ha ha, well, as in many small Canadian towns, the legion is holding a Valentines dance tonight. I'm in a band along with my wife and son and a couple of friends and we are doing the dance tonight, so I will admit that the canoe has been on the back burner for the last couple of weeks. We've been doing a fair amount of rehearsing. However, on Sunday I hope to finish processing enough new strips to finish planking. Stripperguy has spoiled you guys with his lightening fast build, the rest of us mortals got to keep pushing the rock up the mountain!

Fair enough, so what time on Sunday can I expect more pics. JK, have fun at the gig tonight. Better let your cat drive you home. Hey I know, have some one do some video of your gig and post that up tomorrow. I know I for one enjoyed your wedding dance video.

Survived the gig, it was good. Went in on sunday and finished the bead and cove on my remaining strips. The wood is poor quality, i hope I have enough to get through.

That's my bead and cove set up. Was hoping to use the shaper, but the parts still aren't in yet.

I'm up to this height on both sides now. Going is slower, because I'm working with three and four foot pieces.

It's hard to show lines with a 2 D pic, but this is the knuckle on the Osprey, I think it is a little less pronounced than the Kite.

There's the overview.

Don't think I'll get much more done this week, conferences and admin duties and such really eat into the important things in life. Looking forward to retirement!

mem,
I was originally under the impression that the Osprey and Kite were the same hulls from the waterline down. I just compared the two sets of plans (I have both) and the Osprey looks to have a very shallow vee, nearly flat at some sections. The Kite has a very shallow arch. I suspect the Kite will be a much more, uhmmm, active hull, whether I want that or not!!
As far as the knuckle comparison, the two boats are vastly different. I'm anxious to get mine flipped over to get a good look at it, and equally anxious to see yours flipped around.
So c'mon, forget those meaningless meetings, finish stripping!

Ha ha, it's not every day a guy is encouraging me to keep stripping. Hope to get it completely stripped and sanded within two weeks, just thinking about fiberglass right now, it's dang expensive in Canada, plus it gets shipped as a hazardous good, so shipping is often equivalent of 1/5th to 1/6th of the cost. I gotta find a new dealer in Canada. Any of you Canucks out there know of someone other than Noah's?

A most fortunate thing happened today! A snowstorm! Highways were closed and for once, classes were actually cancelled. This unfolded into a most excellent day for me, I didn't have to travel to a conference a hundred miles away, and I didn't have to teach. Instead, I worked on my canoe and listened to the hockey game on CBC radio. In true Canadian style, I must apologize to all of my American friends on line for gloating over the Canadian victory, even though I gloated in private, I still feel kind of bad about my feelings of superiority. Imagine, a country of 30 million defeats a country of 300 million! That's certainly not something to get all Big Feeling about. So once again, my apologies for getting uppity about my hockey team, I feel bad for those poor American players who are probably crying on the phone to their mommies right now.

But anyway, I got a lot done today, in between victory dances.

Now, I ain't quite catching up to Stripperguy, but he hasn't started sanding the inside yet, and just like the women's hockey team, down 2-0 to the yanks in the third period yesterday, I might be able to make an overtime comeback (if the wife lets me out on the weekend).

I'm going home to have a victory beer, er, I mean I'm going home to have a drink and think about those poor suffering American hockey players!

Nice work, Rob. Congratulations on the win. A true story of never giving up, your team has what it takes. I'm very proud of both teams, but in the end it was true Canadian PRIDE, SKILL, and HARD WORK that won the day. I hope all Canadians are happy tonight and feeling good about their wonderful team. A great bunch of athletes that Canadian youth can look up too. Well done.

Geeze Robin, no you're making me feel guilty about my cheap shots. You know, the American girls had that game, got robbed by the goal post. Now there is a move afoot in Canada to vote for that goal post for the next Prime Minister. I don't get it, but my friend says its because the goal post was useful and saved the day. But I don't want to slide into the world of politics. On any given day, the Americans could beat the Canadians, and vice versa.

That project looks great Mem! I wish I had the skills for something even half that ambitious.

Both teams have been proving for the longest time, game in, game out, that there are no quitters, losers, and no underdogs between them; just a lot of hard playing talented athletes, proud to play for flags and families. I'm proud of all of them regardless of uniform.
So memequay, it seems we've finally found a goal post with more personality than our PM. Now, that wasn't hard. Oops, sorry. Anyway, moving on...I'm looking forward to some overtime in the canoe woodshop. I like what you did with the section of dark cedar. The ends look a puzzle to me though. I'll wait and see what happens next.
It rained last night, and the sun came out today. It's feeling a little like s---------, I'm too afraid to say it. I'll believe it when I see it. Just like a final hockey score.

Got that final piece to put in, which is always fun, then I will clean out the troughs at the bow and stern to attach the external stems. They will then be blended into the hull and then the whole hull sanded then fiberglass. Got to order some fiberglass this weekend.

Congratulations on the hockey game and your progress. I am curious how the outer stem will blend into the keel line on the bottom. It would be good to see pics when done.

mem,

You sure did make some good progress!! Now, just that last sliver of a final piece and it's all stripped...should only be another 3 or 4 days ;);).
My final strip took 3 tries to get it right, sometimes it's a no brainer, other times, a little more challenging. I guess it all depends on how wide that final strip is.
Can you get a photo for us (me) from the side? And I see you too need a boost to reach up to the keel line.
Do you have a goal in mind as far as launch dates? Or do you just want to finish before me? I want to be completely done by ice out, mid to late April in the Adirondacks.

Did you find an alternate source for your glass? And where are you getting your resin? Do you have a preference for one resin over another? I'm assuming that you only use epoxy resin...
