Knives and other bladed tools

That's what I'm talking about Jag. Starting out with a Mora (Companion?), moving on to a Helle (Temagami?)...and who knows where it would all lead to? The trip would be fun and the collection cool. Nice collection.

Brad, I just want you to know that I hold no ill will toward you for being a knife collection hater. If you weren't so far away I would consider rounding up some of the guys and holding a intervention for you. My heart aches to see you own a nice quality fixed blade (with a wooden handle of course) (trust me, you are not a synthetic handle guy)(not that there is anything wrong with synthetic handle guys). Peace out, Dave

No hating here Dave. I have a whole lotta lov'n envy for collectors out there. I'm just afraid of the first step. The first purchase. Knowing I'll be stepping off into the deep end of G.A.S. To fight off the knife envy I peruse the online knife stores and make imaginary purchases. Funny thing is I don't end up with the same knives every time.
But the intervention could be fun.

I didn't notice till I looked at the picture, but my little basket of knives are all different but the same haha

I have given away a bunch of the Mora Companions :- ) Before they were popular Sportsman Guide sold them as military surplus 'Swedish Hospital Knives' they were something like $24.95 for a dozen of them. I bought 3 dozen. The knife in the pic is one of them and I think I still have 2 or 3. I'll give it to you Odyssey if you want to try some Swedish goodness :- )

The knife on the top right is a Gerber 'Shorty', I bought in the 70's. It was the first 'real' knife I bought with my own hard earned cash. The top left knife with the green micarta handle and kydex sheath, a friend gave me, it was his submission to the Knife Makers Guild, sheath was made by a friend and the pastor that married my wife and I. I rescued the wood handled Mora out of a gun show ' junk box'. I was looking at the Temagami on Amazon and my wife walked by and said "That's a nice knife!" pressed the 'Buy Now' button and walked off, that's why I have carbon and not stainless steel haha

I didn't really 'collect' my knives they found me :- )

Thanks Jag, that's very generous of you, but I'll ponder a couple Moras online. But thank you, you are indeed generous.
I recognized the bottom 3 but was stumped by the top 2. Those leather sheaths are a treasure.
"Swedish Hospital Knives." Surgery instruments? Cafeteria cutlery? Office letter openers? Those Swedes are a little scary.

Mora makes wood-handled knives too, and some are shorter than others. They're not all plastic handled. And they now make a full tang model. There's also the Mora Robust, which is in between.

What I carry depends on the trip: hunting/dayhike, backpacking, canoeing w/-w/out portages, length of portage, number of folks available to help schlep... it all factors in. I don't like a sheath knife much over 4.5"... at that point, a hatchet does the job better, imho.

I'm never without a SAK Huntsman or Fieldmaster. Then, trip-dependent, I move upwards in weight... Fallkniven WM1 (3" blade) , F1 (4") (both stainless), Condor Nessmuk (4"), larger custom Nessmuk (4.5"), Norlund hatchet (12" handle), Machete (about 16"), Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Ax (19"), Norlund Hudson Bay (24"). I've also got a line of saws that increase in weight and size, to match the trip.

Typically, for a few days + canoe trip in the Adirondacks, with easy portages, in the Fall, with my wife or daughter, I'd take a 3-4" sheath knife (mostly for cooking, cleaning fish, and some wood prep for fires), the 19" Gransfors Bruks, and a full sized buck saw.

When solo, I scale back almost to a backpacking load if there are portages. If they are short/easy/infrequent (Low's Upper Dam), I really like a hatchet/folding saw combo, again with a medium length sheath knife.
