How much heavier is Paint?

A question for those of you how might know. Alan mentioned in a thread somewhere that paint is heavier than varnish, which seems obvious. My question however is by how much? Say for example on a wood strip canoe, you varnish the interior, but paint the exterior hull - how much weight would that add as opposed to varnishing the exterior as well?

A whole gallon of paint only weighs 8 pounds. I can paint a canoe with 2 coats with a little over a pint. That is around a pound.
Varnish doesn't weigh much less than paint but goes on in a thinner layer, maybe a half pint or half a point. Big deal.
Consider shellac.

Depends on the paint, varnish, desired sheen, and coverage. But, for general fluid weight, spar varnish runs about 7.5 pounds per gallon and enamel paint runs about 11 pounds per gallon. Both will significantly reduce during curing. Enamel paint and varnish both have a wide range of solids by weight, but 40-50% can be used generally.

So once they dry out they will weigh less than a pound.
