I'm a new member to the forum, I am up here in Gold Bar, Washington just starting up into Stevens Pass, beautiful country. My long time hobby has been woodworking of all types. The only type of boats I have ever built is RC model boats, but I have always wanted to build a full size boat since I was a kid. So finally I'm getting set up to start a build on the Freedom 17 strip canoe, got the plans and just getting every thing in line.
I would like to start a new build topic when I get started on the build. Any way I real enjoy this forum, Lot of talented builders on this forum.
Thank You.
Harold

Gold Bar. Now that's what I call a great name for a town. Is it named after real gold or a saloon? Welcome to the group!

Welcome to the group, there's lots of answers on a range of topics here, the right ones are the ones that work for you.

Gold Bar started as a prospectors camp in 1889, named by a miner who found traces of gold on a river gravel bar. After Gold Bar became a construction camp for the Great Northern Railway, anti-Chinese sentiment was inflamed by a shooting fray started by disreputable camp followers. To save the lives of the threatened Chinese, construction engineer Eduard Bauer slipped them out of camp in hastily constructed coffins. Gold Bar was officially incorporated on September 16, 1910. The 1940 population was 307.[SUP][6][/SUP]

Hello offshore!!
Plenty of us here that love to build boats, and virtually help others to build their boats too.
A really nice collaborative atmosphere and even an industry insider!
A Freedom 17...who just finished that build? Was it Wysedav?

Did you see that build thread? Was that the final push to get you to commit? Have you decided on wood type, glass layers, resin sources yet?
Be sure to consider your intended usage when you start pinning down the material details.
Oh, and get ready for "The Questions" when you get your boat in the water:
What kind of boat is that?
Did you build that?
Was that a kit? (My personal favorite)

Thank you Strippguy for your comments.

Yes I did see that Build thread by Wysedav, What a great build! How ever I settled on building the Freedom 17 before seeing that thread and coming across this Great forum. My original plan was to build two stitch and glue kayaks, for me and son in law, but after looking at all the strip canoe builds on line I decided to build a strip canoe.
As far as for the wood, there is a lumber yard about 10 miles form me that I can get western red clear cedar from, it is 1"x12"x20' and about 30 miles from me I have another hardwood source with all kinds of different types of hard wood, I also have a fiberglass supplier that has West System Epoxies and fiber glass, I was thinking of one layer of 6 oz. fabric inside and outside.
I was planing on using the plywood that I pick up for the strong back to double as in feed and out feed tables for my 14” Grizzly Band saw for ripping the planks.

Welcome Harold! That look like a nice plan for the build, look like you are all set up as supply line goes anyway. For some of us the wood is the hardest to get, at least in good quality and size... For me it is for sure, Up here not much wood grow to a good size and to good quality(full of knots!).
Cheers

So, you're using western red cedar, 6 oz single layer in and out, west system epoxy and maybe some hardwood trim...
BTW, I have a 14" Grizzly too, mine is going on 30 years old and still working great!!
Do you plan to cove and bead your strips?
I think it's already time to start a dedicated build thread.
I really enjoy seeing how first time builders tackle the various steps.

Good luck Harold...I can't wait to see the build! Any questions, feel free to ask.
