Maybe what you had there was a failure to communicate. (I watch too many movies.)

This stripe camouflage against biting insects is a curious thing. Makes me wonder why there are no striped moose. If you've ever seen clouds of bugs harassing a moose standing neck high in water you'd get the idea.
