Sure. If you are going to paddle wilderness areas with no roads, then every rapid should be considered one class higher than normal, especially with cold water.

Learned #2 the hard way.

Made a quick stop to check out an island campsite on a windy day. Thought I dragged the canoe far enough up the beach. Scouted a couple minutes, walk back to beach and the canoe’s gone. Frantically scanning the area and I see it drifting out in the lake.

Triathlon training paid off as I swam for it. Eventually caught up with it on the opposite shoreline. The ice cold water and adrenaline dump of being marooned on an island could have turned into an emergency. It was over an hour later and my heart rate still wasn’t coming down.

Now I’m paranoid about this. Canoe always gets drug way up on shore and tied down now.
