Buying Canoe Advice for beginner

Dellos, I expect that the choices of tandem tripping canoes in Europe is far less than in the US or Canada, and will likely limit your available selection.

For barrels and a large dog you are probably looking for at least 17 feet in length, with some beam for barrel storage and dog leaning over the gunwales stability. Not SP3 or other poly, unless you can handle the weight both now and for years to come.

With more limited canoe possibilities accommodating two barrel storage and dog space may require some thwart relocation.

I have two 17 foot canoes in the shop and, inspired by Petes photo of the 174 with three barrels, tried fitting in two barrels while leaving space for a 65 lb dog. I used a 60L barrel and a 45L for the test fit. I do not have two 60L barrels.

The barrel test fit canoes.

Mad River Freedom 17, aka Revelation 17. Max width between the inwales 34.5 inches, and of course tapering down from there.

That canoe easily fit both barrels side by side, either in front of or behind the yoke, with a center section between yoke and thwart left wide open for the dog.

Nova Craft Cronje. Max width between the inwales 33.25 inches. The Cronje does not fit both barrels in either location, and placing one barrel on either side of the thwart left no space for the dog other than between your knees.

Curiously, note that the 2 barrel Freedom 17 has two thwarts and a yoke, while the 1 barrel Cronje has a yoke and only one thwart. That barrel storage difference has nothing to do with the small difference between the inwale dimensions, it is wholly due to the placement of the single thwart on the Cronje.

Back to modified to accommodate two barrels, thwarts attached via machine screws, ie slender bolts, through vinyl or aluminum gunwales, are easy to relocat, and since you would likely be locating the thwarts further apart and shorter you could use the same wood and hardware.

While possible I would be less inclined to relocate a thwart with wood gunwales, and with one piece synthetic gunwale and thwart systems I would not even contemplate it.

If you do not mind my asking, what does a TuffStuff Nova Craft Prospector 17 retail for in Poland?

I sometimes envy the new and used boat availability of folks living in Canoe Country, the north east US and Canada, but it could be worse.

Freight costs in the US mean we rarely see Hellmans or Clippers on the east coast. Transatlantic shipping must play hell with canoe prices.

NC prospector 16' fits four barrels nicely, just had to move rear thwarts back about three inches. Managed four barrels in the Cronje two. That canoe is only for two fly weights though, it's a narrow ride.
