There's a 14ft stillwater for sale not too far away, and it's thawing out enough that I'm getting the itch. I don't buy many canoes but I do enjoy looking at what's out there and hunting for bargains. It looks beamy and sluggish, but a good little flatwater boat. Does anyone have one or have experience with one?

I have never paddled one, but I went to look at one a few years ago and noticed how much flex there was in the hull and passed on it. In the 80's and 90's the Katahdin line of fiberglass canoes were offered by Old Town (displacing the earlier Carleton line), and then the Stillwater line appeared, offered as a 'lower cost alternative'. Eventually the Stillwater line won out and Katahdin disappeared. Quantity over quality?

I have a Katahdin. Similar lines and dimensions I believe. It paddles about as fast sideways as forward, but it is very stable if that’s what you are after. I was planning on selling it (cheap) this spring.

I remember looking at a Stillwater 14 in the store (more than once) and thinking it was very much like my Navarro Legacy, but a foot longer. Flat bottom, keeled. Basically, a fishing and photography platform. Didn't take long for me to tire of the Legacy. I lost interest in the Stillwater entirely.

Frankly, I thought OT's royalex Osprey was a better boat in that length.
