I have several Dutch ovens that I used to take on pack trips (mules ain't fussy 'bout what they're packin'). I got a cast aluminum one 15 years ago to use canoe camping. However, I don't make fires like I used to, but still like biscuits. So, my idea is for a fuel source for Dutch ovens. Something that can burn on top of the lid for an hour, at least.

I've only seen people use coals from the fire placed on the lid, they won't last for an hour but they are easily replaceable every 15 minutes or so.

Charcoal briquettes approximately 20-25 for most meals. 2-3 on bottom rest go on lid. If really cold or windy you may need to add more.

I have done it with one of my small twig stoves before. Set up on the lid without the stove base and build a small fire in that. Otherwise, ditch the dutch oven and cook them in a fry pan on a stove. Find a lid that fits or take some aluminum foil to cover the pan. Or get a take-apart Backpacker Oven, weighs less that a cast oven and works great with a stove at the base.

I make them in my fry bake pan on a canister or white gas backpacking stove....I picked up a light weight heat diffuser from the local hardware store and have an old asbestos hood I put over everything to hold the heat.....If I remember, I flip the biscuits about halfway thru the cook time otherwise they get a little crispy on the bottom....even so, still good smothered in sausage gravy!

That was my first thought. It was followed by, "or just build the twig fire on the dutch oven lid" which would also let you transfer embers to beneath the DO as well.

I assume that a “blanket” like the one use with the Outback oven would work good ! I use a frybake pan with the lid and it works awesome!! In fact we don’t even bring a real Dutch oven anymore, those frybake have to be the best pan ever... ok ok close second to my cold handle frying pan!!

For boat trips I often bring a 10 inch aluminum Dutch. Works fine for 4 people or a little more. I use it for everything, often on a gas stove. Sometimes with a fire. Never with charcoal. It can make anything. Bake a cake, biscuits, stir fry, pizza, Mexican food.

I was totally unaware of Fry bake pans. Thanks for the insight. I can't believe the prices on camping pots and pans. Fry bake is pricey but unique while some of the other stuff is crappy and expensive.

They are pricey but what sold me on them is this statement....
