Last weekend was the 2nd ever April paddling trip to the BWCA. Done a few April winter trips cause usually the ice isn't out. The weather was typical spring MN weather, 65 on Saturday, snow on Sunday morning and gale force winds on Monday. This led to the first time in 52 years that I couldn't get out when planned.
Put in on Saturday morning at the Little Isabella river, paddled downstream to the Isabella river, the paddled upstream to Quadga lake. Beautiful day and evening was topped off with a nice campfire. Sunday was cooler and after a morning snow shower the day turned out to be good for exploring. Paddled further up the Isabella river to Rice lake, had a good lunch on an island and then headed back to camp. Most of this area was hit with a fire five years ago and was pretty bleak looking, especially since nothing was out yet this spring. Was fun to see all of the jack pine trees that the fire "sprouted".
Monday morning saw 20-25 mph sustained winds with gusts to 35 that made the lake pretty rough. Tried to give it a go but after one canoe swamped not too far off camp we decided to wait it out. Didn't stop blowing until after dark so we reset up camp and stayed an extra day. Lost my phone and all my pictures, just have one that someone else took.
So after probably 200 different trips to the BWCA finally had to stay an extra day. Was fine with me and we were able to text letting people know we wouldn't be home on time.
