1940's 16' Thompson Bros wood canvas canoe

We figure after we pick up the Y-stern in Wainfleet, Ontario in September we can pawn it off on Mem when we drop by his place on the way home. What better boat for him and the family than a 16 footer he can take the whole family out in with a little kicker on the back.

If that ain't a classic canoe I don't know what is. And a beautiful Lab too.

Bob and I stripped this hull of canvas this morning as we did with the 16' Old Town OTCA. We managed to save almost all the gunnel screws, we saved the Cherry one piece gunnels, and we also saved the brass stem bands, which is a real cost and time savings. Like the OTCA we are working on this is a very good condition canoe, no wood work needed.

The hull is somewhat rough from the last restoration, some epoxy filler needs to be ground off the outside, but it's fair and should clean up nicely,





Pulled out the seats, it's so clean inside we will only need to light sand and give it one coat of varnish, maybe tomorrow.

Bob sanded both the 16' Old Town and the Thompson Bros,

Power wash and a coat of Interlux 90 varnish,

That is in good shape. I like the contrasting colours. It should sell.

I was looking at the June copy of Wooden Canoe today and there is a 17 foot Chestnut Y stern in CT for 1100 OBO. Just sayin.

Yes, that is. This canoe was restored by Schuyler Thomson years ago and he did a really nice job replacing some ribs and fitting those floor rails back in (cherry)

We sold this canoe today to a guy in Oregon via ebay. Good deal for both parties.

Look at you go. Canoe people are funny. A lot of them who are cheap as the day is long ( that would be me) think nothing of buying a boat a half a continent away. Just because it is THEONE that they want.

That Thompson is a lovely canoe with lots of history and character. I had no doubt it would sell.
