I picked this boat up on the side of the road in central Massachusetts, the owner wanted it gone so I grabbed it. From I’ve read it appears to be a Great Canadian with fiberglass over wood. (Images attached) no placard with serial number on the stern only a plaque with a name and the Worcester dealer I assume. My question is how do I refinish the wood/glass after a good sanding? I’m looking to have a nice shiny canoe that shows the wood underneath. Any advice is appreciated.

Varnish is what you want but it looks like the glass is worn through in a couple spots, if my reading of the photos is correct you need to patch those first. I think 4 oz glass is what they use.

I'd agree with Boatman. Sand it, watch for any place(s) where you get into or though the cloth (you'll notice- it'll get "fuzzy" even if it doesn't go through), repair those areas with epoxy & glass. 4 oz is sufficient; s-glass has better abrasion resistance than e-glass but I doubt that you'll find 4 oz s-glass (and, if you do, please share your source).

Some of the others here would know better but it looks like it started life with a canvas covering (?). Nice find; please keep us updated on repairs and welcome to the site.

Maybe years ago they used canvas but these come from the factory with glass. They use the 4oz glass to save weight because there is the whole rib structure inside. I’ve repaired and maintained quite a few of them.
