congrats! dont' worry about newest, latest, greatest or lightweight -- old and big and solid works well for starters -- avoid department store brands for the big tickets, make two trips across the portage, get a tent that is one or two sizes too large -- get decent sleeping-bags -- but not too...

murat -- what about the rouge? looks a lot like this upstream of kingston road. after a rain, you can run it down from finch to the lake, i've done that run a couple times -- but should be good poling up to at least twyn rivers...most of the time...

old chestnuts for sure -- i'm tempted to add one of their cruisers to my mix... don't know that i've paddled one of 'their' boats - but done lots of miles in sibling boats out of new-brunswick -- the molds and lines are pretty classic and time-tested...

interested in the sheets for shelter idea -- i toy with a high-thread-count 'egyptian' cotton sheet...as an in-between for my nylon and my canvas whelen tents... did a couple of my canvas packs with a BLO/turps/Beeswax combo -- hasn't caught fire yet..

love these...my #2 favourite ever paddling footwear...

before old ole' evinrude -- canoes was where it was at for pleasure-boating -- look at some of the old ACA or stoney-lake regatta photos...no gear beyond a girl, a pick-a-nick basket, a ukulele or maybe victrola...

am considering bringing some 'icers' for slick-rock portages...i have a cheap pair in the truck that i use for icy dogwalks in the woods -- thinking they'd be like slip-on caulks for my beans -- that's the theory anyway...
