seeker -- what sort of thread did you use for stitching? my canvas whelen doesn't leak a drop, wax-based canvas tent treatment with cotton stitching, my nylon whelen, with cotton stitching leaked thru the seams and down the nylon tie-outs, drip drip drip in prolonged heavy rain until i...
wood canvas are pretty common around here -- i know of at least three within about fifty feet of me ;)
but they were the 'working-class' of the peterborough boats -- loose-tolerance wooden boats in canvas working overalls -- the all wood board and batten and longitudinal strip boats were their...
on the bright side, the internet -- thirty years ago, what was around was what was around -- now nearly everything is available at my door...if i'm willing to pay shipping...way better selection than i've ever had...i prefer store, and people that i know who know, but it's something...

for the record, the chestnut colour-swatch isn't mine, came from some other chestnut canoe forum a while back...i'd give credit if i knew where
before old ole' evinrude -- canoes was where it was at for pleasure-boating -- look at some of the old ACA or stoney-lake regatta photos...no gear beyond a girl, a pick-a-nick basket, a ukulele or maybe victrola...
am considering bringing some 'icers' for slick-rock portages...i have a cheap pair in the truck that i use for icy dogwalks in the woods -- thinking they'd be like slip-on caulks for my beans -- that's the theory anyway...
