Cell phone coverage in the Adirondacks

I'm no help. One of the highlights of a canoe trip for me is leaving the phone in the truck. Lately, I'm happiest "unplugged". We do carry a Garmin Explorer+ for emergency contact and weather reports though.

What is the ideal canoe dog for a solo canoeist?

I agree this is important. Our Brittany, Libby, checks all the boxes except for this one. At 30 pounds she's a nice size for what we like to do. She fits nicely in the house, truck, canoe and tent. She's intelligent and very well trained. She loves to swim. But when outside she's simply...

    Amazing and memorable events

Our oldest son Ben and I were grouse hunting with our Brittany, Libby, who was then still a puppy. Suddenly Libby ran on a bee line toward the base of an overturned tree and froze, not pointing, faced off with something. I was thinking porcupine and hustled over to retrieve her. Just before I...

    sanding insanity

Newbie here, but I scraped more than I sanded and that worked well for me.

    Tortured Ply canoe

Very interesting. I haven't heard of that method of construction. Build a canoe from sheet goods! I'd follow along with interest.

    Snowshoe Care

I think it's really important to dry them out after each use in a warm space. Once dry, store wherever. I snowshoe a lot. My favorite shoes have ash frames, deer hide lacing and no varnish. The above practice works well for me.

    Equipment T & E

I should take your lead. I test function (does the stove still work?) before the first trip of the year, but other than that, I'm content to wing it and adjust on the fly. That said, our longest trip to date has been 10 days. For longer trips, especially those where you can"t walk out, I'd adopt...

    Cooking fuel

We use white gas for cooking and wood for baking with a reflector oven.

Another Rebuild, '70's RX Explorer (it’s a sickness)

I think it great that you're willing and able to rebuild the Explorer a second time. No need to apologize either for materials and methods used on the first go. Doctors and Lawyers aren't the only ones who "practice" what they do. I think we all do, if the goal is solid work whatever it is, and...

    Save the Moose Campaign 2021

I've been participating in the Northern New England "Save The Deer Campaign" the last couple of months and am just now catching up on my reading. Wonderful trip report! I thoroughly enjoyed it. You set up a comfortable, functional camp and the fact that Irene wants to repeat the experience is...

    Preferred tripping style ?

Tandem, with my wife Karen. We like quiet, remote places. Just us makes it easier to be flexible. No competing agendas. We did take a trip this year with our younger son and his fiancé though, that was stellar! I would like to take more trips in the future with our kids.

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

Ah yes, the weights. Although I haven't focused on weight at all in this build, I have been curious where it might end up. After the "Big Flip" 37 pounds Ready for interior glass 35 After interior glass 41 Now...

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

Thanks Pat. The inwales were a welcome change of pace after all of the fiberglass work. I used the Golden Ratio to size them. Layout was a little fiddly. I allowed 6 inches at the center carry thwart, and 4 inches at the bow and stern thwarts and seat bolt locations. Then the question was how...

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

We glued on the last of the wales yesterday. Temperatures have suddenly turned seasonal and we've settled for daytime highs in the 50's and nighttime lows in the 40's. West System says minimum temperature for 207 hardener is 60 degrees F. Maybe I should stop reading the instructions. I scored a...

NOT... the Whitney Wilderness Loop (as I had planned)

Great photos and narrative. Thank you! I particularly enjoyed the photo of the stump puffballs. I need to learn more about mushrooms. I love them, and know I walk by a lot of good eating.

Adirondacks Whitney Wilderness Loop Fall 2021

Wonderful trip report! Thank you. Impressive adventure all the way around, but I was particularly impressed that when Cricket was engaged with the bear and you called her, she actually came! Great pup, and obviously, good training. We've made separate trips to Low's, Lila, and Little Tupper...

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

We had a nice day in the low 70's and glassed the interior. Karen and I binge watched episode 22, "Sheathing the Hull Interior", of the Canoecraft Workshop Series on YouTube. After 3 consecutive viewings we decided to go with 2 pieces of S-Glass. The major piece went from the stern to 8 inches...

Poll: What do you sleep on mostly when canoe camping?

I use an LL Bean "Camp Futon". It's a self inflating foam pad, and it's thick, bulky, and heavy. I sleep well on it though. Once I've crawled into the @&$*?! tent, I don't know I'm not home in my own bed.
