How I came to buy my canoe

In 1972, my wife and I were camped at a nice drive in campsite at the Twin Islands Campgrounds in Roscoe NY, our site fronted on the beautiful Beaverkill River. Unfortunately, our neighbors were pretty rough and the weekend was anything but enjoyable. While fishing the river, I watched two...

Courting canoe exhibit at the New Hampshire Boat Museum

Nice post, that’s an impressive display. I have a J R Robinson courting canoe on the rack, new canvas has been filled and it’s just waiting for paint.

    Where Are All The Canoes?

This site was originally open to all paddlers. When it became orphaned and I was able to secure ownership with my own funds, my first announcement was that it would be a canoe only site. Actually I wanted it to be open to only “open” canoes but that part went by the wayside. I did catch some...

How to set up the canvas stretcher

Here’s a video showing my stretching unit. I doubt one 2x4 alone at each end would be suitable for anchor points, if you could attach a 2x4 horizontal on the wall, either outside or inside that might do the trick. I used the corner timbers in my pole barn in the video, that worked well. You can...

Your first canoeing or canoe trip memories

My first experience in a canoe was in 1955, shown in the picture below on Muskrat Lake, Cobden, Ontario. I’m 7 yo, in the bow with my two older brothers behind me. My first canoe camping experience was about 5 years later, same lake, same canoe, with a local boy my age. We paddled down Muskrat...

    Where to start?

I would strip the inside of varnish first so you get a good look at all the ribs and planking. This is a nasty tedious job but you will be happy when you see the results. There’s a book by Mike Elliot, “This Old Canoe” that describes restoring a wood canvas canoe from start to finish, its well...

    Downeast Lakes

Thanks Art for that informative report. I have tried to paddle the area a few times but always encountered wind. 3rd and 4th Machias Lakes became excellent options during those times. I like the idea of Dobsis dam drive in sites to wait out the wind option, Thanks for the volunteer work. What...

    Maine Moose Hunting Guide

Most of the moose hunts I have been involved with here in Maine (5), the shooters used 30.06 or .308 iirc.

How much do you learn about an area before tripping?

Before the internet I would mail away for maps and brochures of canoe areas I read about from books and magazines. I spent a lot of time in LaVerendrye, Quebec, solo, they have a nice master map and a series of individual circuit maps. These maps really built up my confidence and I always knew...

Why don't past owners (except Robin) contribute to this site anymore?

I have my own thoughts on this from my experience and conversations with Doug and Dave O but it’s best they be kept to myself. As far as McCrea, he was a very active member of the original Northeast Paddlers Message Board and Paddling.net, he did the same thing there as he did to Canoetripping...

What is your favorite tree and why?

I like cedar and ash for all the pleasure they have given me in this canoe life. Cedar for the planking and ribs of my canoes, ash for the gunnels, thwarts, seats, decks, and paddles. They both are easy to split and make fine campfires. I do like Tamarack for its beauty in the fall northern forest.

    Keels: Yeah or Nay?

I have owned a Chestnut Pal and a Chum which both came out of the factory with keels but I went keel-less when I replaced the canvas. I guess Chestnut considered them “cottage “ canoes, built for recreational purposes vs. the Prospectors and Cruisers which where used for more robust conditions...

    Canvas summer tent

I like canvas tents but I prefer the wall tent designs. That 10x14 looks pretty nice in the ad but I don’t know much about that style of tent. The ad says out of stock till late July. We had a similar canvas tent back in the day and it worked well and lasted a long time. You almost always have...

    WTS: Three Duluth Packs

Nice packs, that’s a great price for someone who wants to start fresh with canvas packs. I had one of those kitchen packs, is that a utensil pack above the kitchen pack, if so, that’s a good deal. Good luck with the sale.

An interview with Garrett Conover, woodsman, author, wilderness canoeist guide.

Marc-Andre Pauze recently interviewed Garrett Conover and published the interview on his quarterly internet publication (marcpauze.net to subscribe). Some of Garrett’s observations might raise some eyebrows here, give it a read. North Woods Ways Wilderness culture through traditional canoe...
